Visibility < 6000 m. Still a problem |

After some flights testing, I have a problem with the option "Ignore Reduced Visibility".
When it is on, the visibility is determined by the option marked in the "Max Surface Visibility" section, meanwhile the visibility from the METAR is above 6000 metres. The problem is when the real visibility from the METAR is about 6000 metres. In some cells the visibility is over this limit, but in other cells the visibility is under. This generates a strange weather depiction, with some cells showing a far visibility (40, 50, 60, 80 miles...), and others a reduced one (less than 6000 metres) in a near space. Going from a "normal" cell to a cell with reduced visibility, creates a foggy layer very annoying. This is very relevant when flying with a fast aircarft. You can see a clear day, and suddenly a foggy day, between seconds. I think the "Ignore Reduced Visibility" should be relaxed until 0 metres, as an additional option. This means the visibility will always be the same, avoiding the creation of zones with very different visibility values between them. I have checked this posibility with AS2012, and definitively the visibility depiction is really stable. Not real but stable. |

We will see about putiing in another option but you will then be departing from real world conditions and effectively ignoring all foggy conditions. I would suggest for now, in such circumstances, when the visibility is border line, you remove the 'Ignore...' option and revert to real world conditions. That is until we add the new option for you.

Consider it done, it will be included in the release version 2.22. We will change it to let you specify the visibility limit, default 6000 metres, but you will be ablbe to alter it between 0 and 10000 metres. Its up to you then, you could set 8000 metres and fly in poor vis, or just put zero and the LWE will ignore all reduced visibility reports. Regards Stephen

It has already been implemented, check out tomorrows 2.22 release version.

Hi Stephen,
Another visibility related question. Could there be an option that extends the lower limit of a visibility layer to the ground when it starts at a low altitude with no clouds in between ? I don't know if I am making myself clear so here is what happened on my yesterday's flight : I was making my descent though a scattered layer of cumuli (+/-5000 ft) then entered a limited visibility layer with no clouds (+/-3000->1500 ft) then all of a sudden, I got what looked as unlimited vis with the cumuli above till landing which looked a bit strange. I would have prefered staying in a limited visibility layer until landing. Regards Jean-Paul

I will look into that, but the visibility layers extend from the ground up and always increase in visibility as you climb higher. If possible, we set the transition levels within cloud layers. But we never decrease the vis in a layer. What may have happened is you moved into an adjacent cell where the vis was better. We do limit the max change in vis between cells, perhaps we need to limit this a bit more. Unfortunately, FSX changes the vis almost instantly when you pass from one zone to another, and has large jumps when the vis is better. There are plenty of small graduations for poor vis but not the other way around, so it can jump from 48km to 64km to 80km etc. it will also depend on your Max Surface Vis setting, the higher that is the fewer transition layers can be used. I will see about minimising the changes as much as I can. Regards Stephen |
