Hello,
I just downloaded FSX Steam edition and am seeking to install UTX Europe. However, in the setup tool I encounter an issue when pointing the tool towards the sim location (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FSX).

I see an error message saying "The SCENERY.CFG or other simulator file(s) could not be located at the expected location below: C:\Users\madde\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX-SE\SCENERY.CFG ..."

Why does it seek the scenery configuration file there rather than in the FSX folder itself? I am using Windows 11 (if that is significant) and there is no AppData folder under my user folder.

I hope you can suggest a fix for this please?

Regards,
Gary.

When you ran the UTX Europe installer and/or the UTX Europe Setup Tool did you do so by right-clicking on them and selecting "Run as administrator"?

When the installer and/or Setup Tool showed locations where it was planning to install things did you manually change them?

Have you ever had the boxed version of FSX installed on this system before?

On some of your questions:

- AppData is a hidden folder within Windows. You would need to change the Folder Options in Windows 11 to be able to see it.
- The Scenery.cfg file found in your main FSX Steam folder is just a template which is copied to its operational location when FSX Steam is initially run. From then on any product, including FSX Steam itself, which modifies any thing which would appear in the Scenery Library makes changes to this copied version and not the template version.

Note that if you are more technically inclined and have a working knowledge of the use of the Windows registry editor here are some previous threads which contain information which may prove useful in troubleshooting:

Many thanks Jeff for the fast response.

To answer your queries:

I did run the UTX installer as administrator. I did manually change install locations as I am seeking to use an external SSD to take the 'pressure' of my add-ons. I attempted to install a boxed FSX version last week, but was getting nowhere with error messages (Windows 10 and 11 just seem to hate it) so I hoped buying the Steam version might save me some more grey hairs.

I'll first try to start from scratch with no change in install locations. Failing that, I'll go try those threads you linked.

Kind regards,
Gary.

All UTX products need to be located in the default locations provided by the installers. You cannot install them in a location outside of the simulators base location.

As you had installed boxed FSX this does complicate matters (as seen in the two previous posts) as registry entries may now be confused between a boxed FSX only, an FSX-SE only, or a co-existance (both FSX boxed and FSX-SE mode). Not sure what the issues you had with the boxed version were, but there is limited functional difference between the boxed and SE versions. I have FSX boxed and FSX-SE installed on a Windows 10 system without issues. Again the important thing is to remember the "right-click and run as adminstrator" choice when running all installers for FSX/FSX-SE and UTX.

See our Frequently Asked Questions section for more information on this and other installation and setup topics.
