GEP3D was designed to function with one installed version of Prepar3D however we understand there may be circumstances where a user may wish to test or try a new version of Prepar3D leaving the older Prepar3D version on the system.
A easy workaround can be applied to use GEP3D with multiple installed versions of Prepar3D.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There can NOT be a 'FSX.exe' file in the same install directory as Prepar3D.exe. If there is, remove it or this process will not work.
Since a backup was already made with the original install, your original backup will work as the backup for any other P3D version.
The steps below outline the process. It is very simple to apply!
1. Browse to the Prepar3D installation where you are currently running GEP3D (in example: the P3Dv3 install directory) and locate the file: Prepar3D.exe
2. Right click Prepar3D.exe and rename it temporarily. You can rename it to anything you like in example: Prepar3D.exe.tmp and allow the change.
3. Once done, launch the GEP3D interface. The interface will request a browse to the location of Prepar3D. Browse it to the 2nd Prepar3D install (in example: The P3Dv4 install directory). Once located the interface will then run and open.
4. Since your original Prepar3D install was 'active' the interface will continue to display ENABLED IN P3D in the new location. This is of course wrong for the new location if this is the first time GEP3D is being installed there,.. but easy to change...
a. In the interface, select the green bullet next to Ground Environment Prepar3D World Edition and click DISABLE.
b. After the interface runs through the disable process, select the now red bullet and click ENABLE
GEP3D will then run the installation of the files into the 2nd Prepar3D install.
5. If you have installed UTX products into the new version of P3D those will be detected and you can now enable the GEP3D/UTX features in the 2nd Prepar3D install. Simply ENABLE the UTX line items in the interface.
6. You can now browse back to the original Prepar3D location and rename Prepar3D.exe.tmp back to Prepar3D.exe
You can now run both Prepar3D versions with full GEP3D support.
IMPORTANT: Once the interface has enabled/installed the GEP3D files, the interface does not need to be open nor pointing to the Prepar3D installation. Once the 5 steps above are complete the files remain active in BOTH versions of Prepar3D until you disable them in the interface.
SWITCHING BACK AND FORTH
Should you wish to switch back to the original Prepar3D install, use the same procedure outlined above to accomplish this.
Switching back and forth at that point is simply a matter of renaming Prepar3D.exe and browsing the interface.
With the GEP3D interface initially closed...
1. Browse to the Prepar3D install directory GEP3D is pointed to.
2. Follow the directions in STEPS 1 through 3 above. (Temp rename Prepar3D.exe, launch and browse the GEP3D interface)
3. Restore temporary name back to: Prepar3D.exe
If GEP3D was originally 'enabled' in that P3D install, the GEP3D interface readout will be correct and you can make changes as you wish.
