As promised, here is the patch to get the 3-tiered landclass approach working between the Ultimate Terrain USA landclass and the FSGenesis USA landclass.

Part of the process will require some manual configuration on your end, while the actual patch process is automated.

It is extremely critical that:

  1. You first install the Ultimate Terrain USA Version 1.1 patch.
  2. You read the FSGLC.PDF document included in the download file.

The ZIP file below is only 633k.

www.scenerysolutions.com/UT/Patch/FsgPatch.zip

Enjoy !   I gave everything a final test this afternoon and the combination looks terrific.

Great news Allen.   One point I'd like to clarify though.  Isn't this solution able to be used with any additional US landclass, not just FSG?   As long as the 3rd landclass is sandwiched between the UTCITY and full UT layers in the scenery.cfg, it should work properly, correct?

I know you mentioned you will be working on Canada/AK soon, so any chance we can get a similar solution for Canada?  I think many users would love to use the UT city landclass, while using other landclass for filling in the rural areas, just as in the US.

Please consider it.  Thanks.

Yes, this solution can be used with any landclass product, as long as the product can be put into it's own layer.  Then, you only have to "sandwich" the 3rd party landclass between "Ultimate Terrain - USA" and the "UTCITY" layer described in the document.

I will also try and look at the same solution for Canada.  However, I am not familiar with any landclass products for Canada.

Thanks.  There are a couple of commercial landclass products for Canada, but more importantly, there are several freeware products that greatly improve on the default.   If you're interested in specifics, I'd be happy to provide the information to you for testing or just fyi.

As long as the solution is open for any 3rd landclass to be sandwiched between the UT layers, it shouldn't matter what it is.   That gives the user flexibility and removes product specificity.   I would assume that this will be an issue for you with UT-Europe as well, where MyWorld and a number of other products and freeware play in the landclass space.

The FSG US landclass includes southern Ontario Canada.

I assume this area covered by UT Canada, will Toronto for example be impacted here, or has it been separated like US cities?

My guess is that the portion of the FSG Landclass in Canada will override the UT Landclass.    The UT Cities will only overwrite the FSG Landclass in the USA.  In Canada, they will be transparent.

Wahoo!  Installed 1.1 patch, and the FSGLC patch.  I'm a happy camper now, best of both worlds!

Allen, your support of UT is unbelieveable.  Thank you very much!

By the way, I've decided to stay with the UT-USA roads instead of reverting to USA Roads.  Accuracy is about the same.  I like the varying widths of the USA Roads, but I like the dirt roads in UT-USA so I guess it's a toss-up.

Jim

MyWorld Landclass covers the whole globe including Canada.  So it might be better to use My World Landclass for rural in Canada and UT for urban if a similar patch can be developed for UT Canada/Alaska.

Wow,

Everything looks great Allen.  I wasn't sure I was missing the FSGenesis landclass, but it is good to see it back and it definetly improves the rural areas.

Thanks for making it happen!

I totally agree.  The FSG Landclass makes a huge difference in the rural areas with UT.

great news.  Theoritically does this 3-layer system require more system performance than simply putting FSgenesis on top of UTUSA?

I once heard someone saying transparent layer is performance killer.

Thank you, I am excited about the patches.

Strange discovery : While attempting to use FSG patch I found all of the LC files and part of the LA files had a "USA" file extension . This prevented me from adding the new folder UTCITY with the LC files that I copied(NOT MOVED) from USA to UTCITY in the FS9 Scenery Library . I successfully upgraded to 1.1 after running the upgrade patch . Question : If this is alittle glitch could I just change all the USA file extensions(ex:  LC922100.USA) to a bgl extention .in the USA folder ? I know this sounds painstakenly slow but I thought this might be better that uninstalling and reinstalling everything .

For those of us who have not yet purchased UT USA and desire to do so, will the new purchase download include all the patches?

If not, how long will it be before the purchase download will be up-to-date at the time of download?

I don't think the FS Genesis landclass patch would be included in any download, as it slightly modifies the file structure and which BGL's are active compared to the default UT.

There are many people who say that not having landclass files in the main scenery directory will cause stutters.   I will try this patch but before it was available I was using the instructions which said to create the directory and put FSGLC on top.   I did that and after about an hour of flight I began getting bad stuttering which got progressively worse as time goes on.

Is this solution certified as stutter free on long flights?

Thanks

Thanks

That is interesting.  I have never heard this.

I ran my 3-tiered landclass method by Justin (FSG) before implementing it.   He thought it was a good idea (and he knows more about landclass than I).

I would be interested in knowing where you heard this ?   If there is any merit to it, then it might be important.

I just can't see how moving landclass around between folders would cause stutters.   But, I have seen stranger things in FS2004.

Maybe I misunderstood. The problem may be only if you have texture folders created in the landclass directory.

I don't know if pasting links to other forums is permitted but it is discussed here http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=121& topic_id=137494&mode=full

and also at another site referenced in that thread.   If that link is not allows in this forum please edit or delete my post.

To my knowledge, that is where it should be.   I just installed the most recent FSG Landclass this week, and it put it in the SCENERY/BASE/SCENERY folder.

Hammer,

Allen is referring to landclass which determines what kind of textures to use, not terrain mesh which determines the elevation and contour of the terrain.  Do you have the FSGenesis US Landclass (current version 1.09) installed?  Sounds like you don't.  When you say you own "land areas", I'm guessing that you mean terrain mesh.  This patch does not affect terrain mesh.

If you do have the US Landclass, by default, with FS2004, the installer will put it in ../scenery/BASE/scenery, but you can override that and put it anywhere.  Have you installed it to a custom location?

If you are still having issues finding it, and you know that you own it, then you may want to reinstall it to a custom location and then perform the actions as documented by Allen.

Can this patch, or, should this patch be used with the free FSG files found on avsim?

I have the FSG US National land class project as well as the world wide "buffer mesh".  Now with UT I am seeing that I need to install the patch discussed here.  I am really mixed as to the order that the different scenery's will appear in the add on scenery window when at the beginning screens of FS9.  Is it possible for someone to post a snap shot of the add on scenery window reflecting the order we want them to appear.  My understanding all is necessary to prevent shuddering ECT...

I appreciate any help.  As made evident here I am the worst at manually configuring files and such inside the program folders, if there was an auto update that did a pretty good job I would be happy for that.

Thank you.

Mark.

PS, Also I have all the mesh installed that Justin has out.  I did not know if this info helped or not.  Thanks agian.

Mark;

Just download the patch file. The readme inside has the pictures you are looking for as to how the scenery should be set up.

I had the same problem as HAmmer, I have all the FSGenesis US terrain mesh,
I don't have the FSGenesis US Landclass.
What is FSGenesis US Landclass for or what does it do,
do I need even if I do not install this pach?
Thanks,  Dan

Landclass tells Flight Sim where the towns, fields, forests, rocks, grass, rough and so on are.  Ultimate Terrain takes over placing the cities and towns, but the FSGenesis landclass will make big difference elsewhere.

You don't need this patch if you don't use the extra landclass.

But if you want more accurate and detailed placement of your scenery outside of cities and towns, it is a great addition.

FSGenesis Compatibility Patch (released 7/12/05)

I attempted to apply this patch with version 1.21 installed and got an error that it did not regognize the *blg(s).

Will I have to uninstall version 1.21 and 1.2, install this patch, and then reinstall version 1.2 and 1.21?

Thanks!

Hi Murray (its been a while).

The FSG Patch is tuned after the landclass files that were released in UT USA Version 1.1.

The two more recent patches (1.2 and 1.21) do not modify the landclass files, so the FSG patch installer should work fine with all patches after version 1.1.

My guess is that your patch to version 1.1 did not take for some reason.

If you can take a screenshot of the error you are getting, I can verify this for you.

If you are somehow out-of-sync, then here is what I would do.

  • Uninstall UT USA
  • Reinstall the full version 1.0.
  • Install the patch from 1.0 to 1.1
  • Install the FSG patch.
  • Install the patch from 1.1 to 1.2
  • Install the patch from 1.20 to 1.21.

You may spend more time trying to get back in sync, then you would by reinstalling everthing in order.

Make sure you reboot your system before beginning the process, to make sure any file locks are released.

I will have to test it, but the new version should not cause any errors (in theory).

I have the same problem.  Fresh install of 1.21 (just bought it), and new FSGLC.  Followed instructions exactly, but running the patch issues the following error:

This program cannot update the installed version of FSGenesis Landclass Patch for Ultimate Terrain USA because of the following reason:

E:\PROGRAM FILES\MICROSOFT GAMES\FLIGHT SIMULATOR 9\SCENERY\UTCITY\SCENERY\LC915190.BGL: unknown version.

Please help - I'm dying to see UT+FSGLC+BEV!  I have fully uninstalled/reinstalled/reattempted, same error.  Thanks in advance!

Hmmm.  I will try and remember to test it out this weekend (remind me if I don't respond here by Monday).

In theory, v1.21 should work just fine with the patch.   If not, then I will have to rebuild a new patch.

As I had to do a fresh install of my UT USA 1.21 I checked that the patch supplied still worked. Had no problems and worked exactly as documented.

Interesting that you couldn't reproduce the problem, but it doesn't convince me that there might not still be a problem.

Was your path as long as the one I used?  Do you point the patch at E:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\UTCITY\Scenery?

The first time I installed FSGLC, then UT, then the patch.  Having never run UT before, I couldn't figure out why the patch wasn't working - turns out the docs didn't say you should run the UT config tool in order to get the UTCITY suffixes switched from .XXX to .bgl before patching, but I figured that out.  The 'unknown version' error I can't figure out though.  Contents of my scenery/utcity/scenery folder are LC905240.bgl-LC9310160.bgl, 116 files.  Is that right?

Thanks again for your time!
