Hello my friendly pilots......

Its funny i actually have 40 real hours in a piper from Republic airport in farmingdale.......Ive bought all the books on how to read the charts...but i guess im either lazy or slow or both...i was wondering if anyone can explain to me how to read STARS AND SIDS...and how execute them...with fsx atc.....do i still interact with atc first or do i execute the procedures first......and how do you read the different climbs like breezy point climb from lga ext ext.....

if anyone would like to take this on i would appreciate it thank you in advance.............

My suggestion to you, is to go to a pilot supply store, and purchase the same books used when someone works towards their IFR certification. There is just too much information to explain it all in a forum.

Come back when you have something more specific about a certain chart, and we can try to help you with it; however you will have to have the general knowledge on how it all works first.

If you are asking specifically how to execute a SID or STAR in relation to FSX (or FS-9 for that matter), rather than how to read and execute one general, the short answer is that basically you can't.  Not unless you first write the SID or STAR into the FSX (or 9) flight plan as part of your normal routing.  You cannot write a flight plan to airport KXXX, execute a SID and then join your flight plan.  The best you can do is, again, write the procedure into the flight plan so that the wonderful FSX ATC simply sees it as part of the overall flight plan.

Then I guess I better stop doing that.  Wink

Perhaps I need to broaden on my original reply a bit here and make an admission:

The admission:  It has been so very many years since I last used the default ATC that the fact that you clearly specified using the default slipped past me.  It is so laughably crude a system that I switched to Radar Contact quite some time ago.  So basically I have no clear idea as to how default ATC handles deviations from the written flight plan.  In Radar Contact deviations (there are exceptions) will result in your being sent to see the FSDO guy in a big hurry, possibly with the result of your "ticket" being lifted.

Radar Contact:  That is the program I was thinking of when you spoke of flying a SID or STAR.  In RC you are best off writing the SID's & STAR's into the flight plan.

But still, if you are asking for instructions as to how to read  SID's and STAR's in the real world see the other posts above. Or call your actual flight instructor as Luap suggests

Google "FAA SIDS STARS ILS WAAS", but don't use the quotation marks. The results will contain numerous sources for SIDS STARS ILS and WAAS approach procedures. Both FAA and commercial sources will be displayed in the results.

I suggest using the FAA training products for those systems. Look for FAA at the beginning of any web address. Better still - go to the FAA.gov website and use the same search terms. Although far from perfect, the FAA training products are usually updated as the systems change. Commercial products may not stay current with the changes.

Pay close attention to any dates associated with any website or document you use. The only thing that changes more quickly than the US Natonal Airspace systems is the weather...

Good luck
