Produce or use real world SIGMETs ?

You will find the OpusFSI LWA Map and Wx Locator/Overview Map useful for checking areas of turbulence and thunderstorm activity.

Hi Stephan,

Use Real world SIGMETS. Is there a way of having this data accessible to an ACARS system, like Active Sky allows via (TCIP/Port)?

Yes, I could look at adding them and including relevant data within the OpusFSI Wx reports etc..

Hi Stephen

Have you managed to make any progress on this?

Yes but it will take time as SIGMETs format is not always adhered to by those issuing them especially when the area of interest is specified. We are currently reading them and decoding most parts of the messages. The most useful are the turbulence warnings, all other types have much less impact on the weather engine due to the very nature of the SIGMETs.

The format and syntax is very human reader orientated and many SIGMET writers have their own non standard descriptive text, especially those that do not have English as their first language. They are really best suited to human interpretation hence it requires a lot of work to decipher international SIGMETs, NOAA does not bother even trying and only maps US ones.

I am concentrating on Severe Turbulence (very useful) and Convective (not so useful) International SIGMETs at present.
