As an avid "low and slow" pilot, I am hanging out for this product. Roads and Railroads and a real life chart are my premier navigation tools, which begs the question, what is to happen (if anything) to the existing fs9 railroads? Teecee.

Terry,

The existing railroads are still there.   Only the original FS2004 roads have been removed.

I wonder if the developers intend to add railroad lines and facilites at a later date. Railroads are very conspicuous from the air; doubly so for the yards because of service facilities. Some cities are well known for their railyards. Chicago, LA, Kansas City, Altoona, Albany, New York; Roseville & Bakersfield Cali (to name but a few) all have huge railroad yards that could be used as visual waypoints. GE's locomotive shops complex in Erie PA is HUGE.  I'll bet I'm not the only one who would be interested in such an addon.

Here's another vote for railroads.  Trains and planes are two of my passions.  It's great anytime I get to combine the two.  I spent hours in Fly! following the railroads that were in my Terrasceane sceaneries.

I did the same thing. Terrascene did a really nice job of putting together the things you need for VFR flight. It sounds like USA Roads will be a huge step in the right direction for MSFS.

Terrascene was an awesome product, of which I am VERY familiar with (I was on a small team of developers with Todd Klaus and Richard Harvey).

The only problem with Terrascene, is that it would take well over 500gb (gigabytes) of disk space to do the entire USA.

The same is true for using 4 or 5 meter aerial or satellite images in FS2004.

That is why using vector based roads (such as USA Roads) is so important right now.    The entire USA takes only 500mb (megabytes) of disk storage.

The drawback to using vector-based roads is that you are limited as to what you can do from a visual standpoint.   This is due to the limited amount of flexibility regarding texture use, and the unpredictablity as far as how FS2004 is going to use them at runtime.

That is one thing we hope people will understand.   The vector-based roads (such as USA Roads) look very nice, as you can see from the screenshots.   But, they can never mach the visual quality of photographic scenery (raster-images) until Microsoft improves the way the roads are drawn.

Someday we may see the whole world with photographic terrain, but it is still a long way off.
