Update 5 is now ready.  We are releasing it here first privately before we make it fully public. Read this information, as well as the extra downloading notes...

Ground Environment X - USA & Canada Update 5 (product version 1.05)

You must have verision 1.04 (the Enhanced version) of Ground Environment X - USA & Canada for this update to install. If you do not have that version, please click the Updates button in the GEX interface for more information on the update.

Please make sure the main Ground Environment X USA-Canada program is NOT running prior to installing this update.

After this update is installed, you may be prompted to rerun the backup process. All currently saved backup files will be skipped. Just the new files added will be backed up.

After you install the update, you must reinstall the textures through the program interface by pressing the "Install Selected Options" button.

This update includes all previous updates. The full list of updates is below:

Update 5 Information

All users of GEX Enhanced v1.04 are urged to install this update. This update includes fixes to the original GEXn release, and, includes a new set of texture masks which will greatly enhance the coverage area of urban environments by significantly reducing the effect of cut-off textures, and redefines urban environments so textures display more smoothly, and are much more uniform. It also prevents baseball and football fields from being cut in half.

All users of GEX Enhanced v1.04 and Ultimate Terrain X - USA/Canada are urged to install this update. The update corrects the UTX Custom Landclass Layer for both daytime and nighttime so it blends in seamlessly with GEX Enhanced. A completely enhanced industrial day and night environment has been developed so users of GEX Enhanced and UTX receive all the benefits of the GEXn texture process.

Additional Fixes

- Fixed too red/range colors on some tiles.

- Tweaked autogen building height on some tiles.

Download Information

Flight1 is testing a new content delivery system. This may make downloading to your location very fast. To download this update, click the link below. But if you can, please reply to this thread with the following info...

1. Your Location (City is all that is needed).
2. Top Download Rate (350 Kbs, 1.3Mbs for example).
3. Is this download fast for you compared to other downloads.

Reporting is not required, but it will help us with the distribution test. - Click Here to Download (202 MB)

Note: We will not update the check for updates feature until this is released officially. Also, note that you need to install any Ultimate Terrain X GEXn textures AFTER you use the Ultimate Terrain X interface if you make any changes to UTX.

The differences will be in Europe mostly, compared to downloading from the USA directly.

Some USA users would see a big benefit during peak periods.

I tried the download at work and its pretty slow for me.  I'm in SD.

I was only getting 150KB/sec with a single connection, and I'm sitting right on our backbone.  With my download accelerator I'm getting about 1.3MB/sec.

For comparison I just pulled down a game demo from nvidia at 900KB/sec on a single connection, and 7MB/sec with the accelerator.

Quote ........Also, note that you need to install any Ultimate Terrain X GEXn textures AFTER you use the Ultimate Terrain X interface if you make any changes to UTX.

Does this mean that any UTX change will require a reloading of GEX-UTX textures or, only specific changes?

Perhaps a clearification is in order?

Posted By: NickN

Just an install of any UTX product

UTX interface changes do not overwrite textures they only switch elements of UTX on and off

I'm a bit confused about the backup process in installing 1.05.

My current backup is of the original FSX textures, which is all I want to keep.  It seems like running backup again, as recommended above, would overwrite some or all of those with previous versions of the GEX files.  Am I missing something?

There is a list that the tool will look at and if new files are not in the backup, it will back them up and skip the ones that already are.. if I am not mistaken

I do not work on the interface or the installer, just the textures so someone like Steve or Anthony would have to confirm that for sure but as i recall from a recent conversation, that is how it works so it will not overwrite anything, just add to it as needed.

dartmouth massachusetts.  started with 1.3 MB/sec and weaned it's way down to 760 mb/sec and pretty much stayed there.  so much for Comcast 4 MB like they say.  this is a bit above my average DL speed for me.

Posted By: NickN
Date Posted: February-27-2008 at 10:15am

Its not 4MB  its 4mb   Megabytes and Megabits are 2 different things and ISP's like Comcast love to play with the terminology because they know most don't know the difference and assume.

Comcast gives a % of overhead so 4 megabits is .5 megabytes... or 500KB/s and with their overhead they allow a burst depending on the network, your network card settings, and, how busy the network is and it will trickle down... so you can see 'burst' peaks of as high as 2-3000KB/s or 2-3MB/s if your network card in Windows is tuned to allow the higher burts. But it will trickle down no matter what.

In that, they can get away, legally, posting the numbers

If you open the RWIN window and tweak on the network card (requires a bit of learning) you can probably hold right around 900-1300KB\s with that Comcast connection and burst to 3-4000KB\s (3-4MB/s)... that is why they can post what they say and get away with it. It is possible to hit those numbers... what they dont tell you is it is not possible to maintain them..  and their fine print disclaimer will say the values are based on several factors    LOL

Sorry... lets call it the TCP Receive Window

This is to be used at your own risk. Tweaking such things should be done after learning how the system works and how your ISP functions in your area

Use this software...

SG TCP Optimizer -

back up the current settings to recover if it does not help, then make sure the right adapter is shown in the drop-down and make the following changes:

These are settings for Comcast with the account most use, however they can nned to be tweaked for different types of acconnts and locations, and, they can be used for other ISP with variations..

I do wish to point out that not all Comcast customers may see a positive change with that. There is more to tuning the network connection than using settings that someone else may post. Your location may demand a different TTL or TCP Recieve Window.

You may wish to learn about the settings and ISP's here before trying. -

You can restore the original from the backup you made at any time.
