I saw a reference to performance saying that the impact on performance was something that was planned for and kept to a minimum but I'm not quite sure what that means. Looking at some of the screenshots really gives me some concern as some of the smaller cities Steve has posted look incredibly complex, far more so than anything else we've seen which makes me wonder what really busy areas would be like. What is the impact on performance from relatively rural areas to complex urban areas? |

I think you will be shocked at just how little impact there is on frame rates. This is mostly due to the fact that we were able to remove anywhere between 90% and 99% of the original number line segment points. This was done without sacrificing accuracy (+/- a meter or two). I tested USA Roads on several different systems of varying performance capability. For each test, I removed all variable settings that affect frame rates (scenery complexity, autogen, weather, and air traffic). The target frame rate was then set to "unlimited". On each machine I tested with and without USA Roads in the same location (Philadelphia, PA). The frame rate reduction caused by USA Roads was not measurable using the FS2004 frame rate counter. I then removed USA Roads again and tested the frame rate decreases brought on by other FS2004 features. - Autogen dropped frame rates up to 10 FPS - Maxing out the scenery complexity dropped frame rates by up to 15 FPS. - Air traffic dropped rates by up to 19 FPS (default traffic). - Weather caused a reduction of up to 50 FPS. The values above are approximations of course. But, it really put into perspective just how little the frame rates are affected by this package. |

Anything that is not default has the ability to impact frame rates. I can barely tell any difference if any at all. Regards, Jim Rhoads |

Excellent especially given that KPHL is my home airport.

One factor which could be levered in is that, to VFR jockeys, the roads will actually assume FAR greater importance than the autogen. One hardly ever makes a turn by a forest, usually a man-made feature or prominent landmark is better.
By actually following roads I suspect it will be possible to turn autogen levels down and still gain in the level of immersion. The only proviso to that is tree density - but there are aftermarket autogen trees available that increase the density. |
