Hi,
I'm wondering about the use of the intertial separator in the PC-12. When should it be used? I assume its purpose is to prevent grit from entering the turbine when operating on dirt strips, or to prevent ice when operating in icing conditions. But it has a major impact on engine performance so using it during takeoff might not be such a great idea unless absolutely required? Tom |

In addition to FOD I believe it's also used when passing through dense cloud. Mart. |

You're right Mart, the concern is ice particle ingestion so ambient temp is part of the decision. |

I know this is an older topic, but...
Outside of icing conditions, the real world PC-12 flight manual tells you to open the inertial separator when operating on unprepared surfaces for FOD protection. Logic suggests that the same would hold true when operating in any environment where FOD is a possibility. You really wouldn't want risk anything chunky making its way through the induction path and into the compressor section of a reverse-flow free-turbine turboprop engine. |

We have the inertial separator open when operating below 10000ft and in icing conditions.

Your inertial separator (aka Ice Vanes) should always be extended in visible moisture and the igniters should be on. The flame in a PT6 is really really small (I've heard golf ball size but never really had a solid source on that) so you really have to do everything you can to prevent moisture from getting into the combustion chamber and putting that fire out. It's also important to remember that an inertial separator is an "Anti-icing" device not "De-icing" device. Even though MSFS doesn't simulate this.

PC in the real world-12 flight manual tells you to open inertial separator when using surfaces prepared for the protection of OD. Logic suggests that the same would apply if they operate in an environment where OD is a possibility. You do not really need something chunky risk to get ahead in the process of induction and in the compressor section of the free reverse circulation turbine turboprop engine.
