Hello everybody,
I recently build a new computer with Windows 10 replacing my old Windows 7 machine. I just installed FSX SE. Everytime I want to start a flight in fullscreen mode I get a black screen instead of the loading bar and can't even start the task manager to end the process. I have to restart my system. Alt-enter is also not working. FSX-SE is not installed in Program Fils (x86) but in the Steam folder directly under C: No add-ons, just a clean FSX-SE. The latest Nvidia driver is installed following the instructions from NickN. Tried running FSX-SE set to windows 7 or Windows 8 compatibiltiy, also as admin, no change. FSX-SE loads a flight when DX10 preview is enabled or in DX9 window mode only. Has anybody else had similar issues and could direct me towards a solution? thanks |

Make sure both the Windows monitor resolution and FSX are set to the same resolution. IE: If its set to 2560x1600 x32 in Windows make sure it is the same in FSX.
I have heard of some applications causing issues like this such as Team Viewer There is a large list out there about this issue stemming from 2007. Can be driver related, ALT ENTER related, conflict of software, addons related, DirectX related, etc. Also when the screen is black and ALT ENTER doesn't work, try hitting the Windows key to see if it drops to the desktop and then try going back. Last.. you must still have the latest OLDER DirectX updates installed even with Windows 10 in order to run FSX. I would think Steam Edition would have installed them though https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 You should still run that tool (uncheck the BING install or any other junk) to confirm you have all the older DX updates that FSX require. |

Hi again,
first of all, thanks for your answer. The windows monitor resolution and FSX match, in my case it's 3440x1440 x32 at 60Hz. I made sure there are no traces left of Teamviewer as I already read about this maybe causing an issue like that. Thanks for pointing me towards the DirectX installer, I ran it but it seems all the necessary files were installed. I checked my Nvidia drivers and found out that I had the DCH instead of the standard drivers. So I went through the whole process of disconnecting from the internet, removing the drivers in safemode (set up with bcdedit) with a program called DDU and installing the standard drivers from Nvidia. Next I heard somewhere it might be caused by the new type of Nvidia cards, I have an RTX 2080 Ti. So I exchanged that with my old 980 GTX. I uninstalled FSX SE completely, including all traces in the registry and reinstalled with Steam set to "run this program as an administrator", just to make sure that is covered. Also FSX SE is set the same way. All the testing with FSX SE has been done without any addons installed. The sim runs fine with either DX10 preview enabled - both in fullscreen and window mode, or as DX9 just in window mode using the setting Maximized=2 under [Main] in the FSX.cfg. When in DX9 mode, whenever I try to load a flight in fullscreen I get the black screen. The same happens, when I load a flight in window mode and use ALT-Enter to go to fullscreen or use the corresponding entry in the dropdown menue in-sim. When the black screen appears, the only thing I can do is use the Windows-key on the keyboard and restart the computer or shut it down from there. I can though start the Task Manager with CTRL-SHIFT-Esc. It won't be visible at first, because the focus goes back to the black screen. But when hitting the Windows key again I see the task manager being active in the taskbar. I can hover over it with the mouse which lets me see it on the desktop. It's showing FSX as "not responding". I can't access it, because once I move the mouse away from the taskbar I'm back at the black screen. Sorry for the long text, I tried to rule out as much as possible. For now I'm using a tool to remove the border when in window mode, so FSX SE appears as being in fullscreen. I don't really want to use DX10 preview, as I'm not sure how that would work with my addons. My system: 9700K@ 5.1 GHz Asus Hero XI G.Skill 32GB CL14 RTX 2080 TI Windows 10 Pro If there is anything else I can check or try, please let me know. Again, thanks for the help, it's much appreciated. Malte

I have no idea other than some stupid Windows 10 game mode or other Windows 10 feature screwing up with works. It runs fine here on Windows 10 latest official patches (not previews), 780GTX, driver 436.30
Maximized=2 means you are starting in Window mode instead of full screen I have Maximized=1 in my config with WideViewAspect=True. You could try dropping the resolution and see what happens. Other than Nvidia Inspector setup which I outlined here for FSX (SE) https://www.simforums.com/forums/nvi-w7810-driver-setup-fsx-fsxse-and-p3d-update_topic59954.html there is really nothing else I can suggest.

If you have only tried one driver perhaps a drop to a earlier version. Be sure to use the CLEAN INSTALL routine.
What ever it is, it appears to be local to your system.

I tried it with a lower resolution, same thing. I also made sure, that Windows Game Mode is actually off. I will try with an older driver. Thanks for all your help.

After not believing anymore in finding a solution I can now report that the problem is fixed. Funny enough installing Open Office on my system seems to have done the trick. Every test I did that resulted in the issue of getting a black screen once I tried to go into fullscreen was done on a new install of Windows 10 64 bit Pro and FSX-SE. After using a temporary fix, aprogram called borderless gaming - I went on with installing the rest of the programs I use on my system. The installer of Open Office put a bunch of different Visual C++ versions on my system, couple of 2008, 2010, 2013 and 2017. I did not test yet which one of these was needed in order to run FSX in fullscreen. But I can run FSX in fullscreen now. Hopefully this will help anybody who encounters the same problem. Thanks again NickN for your help. Regards, Malte

The only item I know of with C++ installers was outlined in the bible thread I posted years ago for FSX
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT: Just after installing FSX with the patches, install the POST SP1 C++ Library 2005 Update The C++ Library update is needed for aircraft support and is installed with FSX/Acceleration. The link above is to the update which did not ship with Acceleration. You want the 32bit version (x86) not the 64 bit version even if you use a 64bit OS. FSX is a 32bit application and requires the 32bit version of the C++ Library update which is what is linked above. IMPORTANT NOTE: After you have applied the Post SP1 2005 C++ Library patch Windows Update will locate the version and update it automatically and correctly. The original update that shipped with FSX/Acceleration has a error in it that the patch above corrects and from there Windows Update under the 'OPTIONAL' updates will offer a update version (VC++ 2010) which is required for many different planes. ----------------------------------------------------------------- But I never heard of that update or missing C++ files causing a black full screen issue. I would also think FSX-SE would have corrected and eliminated the need for that since it was posted for FSX box only. |

I know this is an old thread. But, in case anyone is having this issue, like I am, and there likely is, installing OpenOffice did nothing for me. I figured it was worth a shot though since I'm experiencing the exact same problem that @malrett described.
