It doesn't appear that there's much activity in this forum, especially in recent years. But, as someone who was trying to find the best FSX working model of a Avidyne SR22 to use as a trainer for the real world, I thought I'd post this information in case any others find themselves on the same "quest". Hopefully this will allow others to avoid the trials and tribulations I went through. :)

Here's what I'm running:
  • Eaglesoft SR22 G2/G3 Turbo
  • RealityXP GNS430W (single unit only) version 1.6
  • FSAvidyne PFD & MFD version 1.2
  • FSAvidyne S-Tec 55x
The main benefits I'm enjoying are:
  • RXP GNS430W with a July 2011 database
  • Coupled LPV approaches (using the FSAvidyne S-Tec 55x)
  • FSAvidyne's enhanced, purpose-built MFD and PFD
I'm a VC-centric flyer so this information is specifically geared toward VC vs. 2D. The config steps for 2D should still be performed though.

The panel merge found here does not work for the G2/G3 Turbo but it did provide a good place from which to start my merging process. Simply use the panel.cfg file contained in the link above as an indication where you need to add entries for the FSAvidyne MFD and PFD, as well as the S-Tec. This is pretty straightforward but also ensure you update the path within the panel.cfg entries to point to your fsavidyne.ini file.

When editing the panel.cfg, you cannot disable the Eaglesoft PFD/MFD and retain functionality of the VC. What you can do, however, is to resize their instances to 1px by 1px which will effectively remove them from view but not disable them. An example of this is below:
gauge07=essr22avidynesTx!PFD,  315,57,1,1,PFD VC
gauge08=essr22avidynesTx!MFD,  27,570,1,1,MFD VC

The RealityXP integration for the VC is pretty straightforward and detailed within the RealityXP forums here on this site. I've enabled the LinkGPS=On switch in the realityxp.ini file within the SimObject's aircraft folder. As a side note, I've also updated the Garmin trainer's database to the July 2011 nav cycle using the trainer for the GTN650 here. Instructions for updating are in the RXP forum section.

With your RXP 430W unit in the top slot, you can retain the second Eaglesoft GNS unit as-is in the lower slot. Crossfill obviously won't work between the two units but it will give you a backup GNS430 to use if you want.

Overall, I'm pretty pleased with this setup. Sure, there are limitations but nothing that would be considered a show stopper. All of this has greatly enhanced my enjoyment of an already enjoyable Eaglesoft Cirrus SR22.

Here's a full sized image showing the above combination performing a coupled LPV approach to RNAV (GPS) runway 12 at KMLE. Works quite well. Link to full size image.

Now THERE is some wizardry!!! Thank you for figuring this out! I don't currently have the FS Avidyne gauge suite, but I will most likely purchase it now that I have read your post! I will do a bit more research first, but it seems as though this is the best alternative...heck, I spent $200 on RXP gauges, what is another $32....
...I do have to ask, though...how are your framerates compared to the default? Also, can the .ini file that you posted be used in the panel folder? I am not a fan of automated setups, unless it is necessary. I noticed in the flight1 screenshots of the product that the engine page seems to be lacking the lean assist? Is this not modelled? Thanks for your help with solving the compatibility issue and your suggestions as well.

That was my thought as well, I'm "in" for around $110 to replicate a $400,000+ airplane so not a big deal, I figured. Besides, I bought the ESDG Cirrus so long ago that I'm certain I've fully depreciated it from my Flight Sim accounting books. LOL

Don't forget though that since it's a Flight1 wrapper product, you can always get a refund within the 30 day window if you can't get it to work.

I've not noticed any significant impact. However, I realize that it would have been helpful for me to post my system specs:

Intel i7 2600k overclocked to 4.3 GHz
GTX470 Superclocked
8GB G Skill DDR3 2200
1TB WD Caviar Black 64mb cache (FSX/FS9)
60GB OCZ Vertex 2 SSD (Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit)

FSX runs locked at 30 fps and that rate seems unaffected using the FSAvidyne product running the PFD and MFD at its maximum redraw rate along with the RXP 430W and the stock ESDG 430.

That's where mine resides and I believe it gets read correctly.

That seems to be true - well, it is modelled in that there is a soft key option for it but it doesn't seem to work all that well. I tend to just not use it (as some RW Cirrus pilots also do) and do the "big pull" (lean) back to 50-70 LOP. This gives me around 15-16 GPH at a groundspeed int he 175 knots range - which is not bad at all.

Thanks Trevor! I appreciate the info! I am very familiar with the big pull, but I almost always use the lean assist on longer duration flights IRL. I know it isn't really modelled well in the ESDG stock avidyne units, but at least there is something there that sorta kinda represents it lol.

...My system is an i7-2600k @4.8 with a 580GTX 1.5gig, so I don't think I will have an issue but you never know until you ask. Thanks for your responses!

Cool! Then you'll appreciate what I was going to write about leaning to stay out of the EGT "red fin" area - basically, that's the method I use rather than the lean assist. Though to be honest, it might be well modelled in the FSAvidyne and I just haven't had much luck with it. Either way, its functionality, or possibly lack thereof definitely is not a show-stopper in my book since there are other ways around it. :)

Oh yeah - shouldn't be any problem at all.

Another limitation I was going to mention above is that there is no visual cue on the PFD for the vertical guidance while on a GPS-coupled approach. But, I guess it's not that big of a deal if you're letting the autopilot do the work... FWIW though, I think FSAvidyne models the Entegra R6 version and, if I recall, those WAAS sort of enhancements didn't come along until R7 so it'd likely not be there anyhow.

Lastly, I should have offered, but feel free to email or PM me if you have any issues with the config. I know my instructions above might be a little difficult to follow and I'm happy to take the time to help out.

Thanks again, Trevor. Nice to see a fellow Cirrus pilot actually getting into it. Shame the 'training' model doesn't have VC compatibility, or I would jump on it. And yes, the vertical profile was introduced with the R7. I am not too worried about that personally. I am simply looking for the most realistic Avidyne/RXP Garmin combo I can get my hands on, since it is what I currently fly 90% of the time. I will soon be transitioning into a Perspective 22, so hopefully one of the upcoming models from Carenado or Eaglesoft will be comprehensive enough to include AIRAC data updates through Navigraph and also the WAAS capability in their G1000's. If not, maybe Flight1 will produce a G1000 like the one in the 182T that can be fitted into those models. Time will tell....

Either way, I will be purchasing this panel in the next day or two. I will follow the instructions you outlined and should any problems arise I will let you know. Thanks again for your help and input.

....Oh almost forgot to ask...I have the RXP unlimited pack, and right now my 22 and 22 Turbo both have the dual RXP 430 combo with crossfill and all the trimmings including the database update to the 2011 standard. Where does the FS avidyne draw its waypoint info from? In other words, what happens when you select an approach from the newer 2011 database in the RXP unit? DOes it show all waypoints on the Avidyne? I know that the FSX database is waaaay out of date, so If I select a newer approach on the stock unit (which still uses the FSX database) the RXP shows it, but the Avidyne does not. Do they show on the FS AVidyne? Is the FS Avidyne getting its info directly from the RX units? Thanks again, and sorry for all of the silly questions!

Ok...went ahead and purchased it, and followed all of trevor's instructions. It works GREAT!! I am really enjoying the increased functionality and overall integration.

....Trevor, is there any way you could send me the fsavidyne.ini you used with the turbo? I am using a modded version of the one available here for download (made for the non-turbo 22) with my turbo..I changed the V speeds, but I am unsure what else needs to be changed for that aircraft as I am not intimately familiar with the Turbo IRL...

Awesome! Glad its working for you - definitely an improvement over the default units, which were good in their own right, this just takes it to another level. I've put about 10 hours on it so far and have had no issues, crashes, or otherwise. Just the aforementioned "quirks" (none of which are a big deal).

Very nice! The Perspective package is definitely top notch from everything I've read and seen. I'm definitely hopeful for the Carenado model as well but I have the sneaking suspicion that it's not going to be as fully featured as one would like. It'd be awesome if someone could develop a G1000 (let alone Perspective!) based off of the trainers Garmin sells, just like was done with the GNS430 units, but I doubt that day will ever come. Until then, I think "partial functionality" is the best we can ask for - let's just hope the parts we get are the ones we need! :) As an aside, the Mindstar G1000 has a Perspective display mode but without the remote keypad and a/p controls, it doesn't do a whole lot of good.

You've probably already seen this in action after purchasing the unit, but approach waypoints are, as far as I can tell, drawn from whichever DB the RXP unit is using. I believe that the linkgps=on switch helps out here. That said, if you display fixes and navaids, as well as the NRST options on the moving map, I'm not sure where that database is - something built into FSAvidyne units, maybe? i've not really played around with it that much to determine a source.

Changing the V-speeds is all I've done as well but there are likely more tweaks as you allude to. To be honest though, I didn't invest much time in it since I wanted to evaluate that it worked first before messing around too much more with it... Now since that "break-in period" is over, I'll take a look at the fsavidyne.ini file options and see what needs to be changed.

Enjoy your flights! :)

You must have just been here in Duluth for COPA :)

I work ATC there and worked most of you guys into Duluth. Apparently things were a little more dicey when you guys left.

Hi

I have some issues with the Avidyne PFD on FSX
( I am real IFR pilote on SR20 G3)
The PFD don't show the needles in LNAV and LPV
( with APR activated PA guidance OK but no needle)
I could not see the photo.
Could you  put one on the site?
Thanks

Bernard Toulouse
