Hi Ralf,

Thanks for the nice comments. I will investigate the on-screen Destination and Alternate weather reports. Not sure if the distant weather is available in the En Route report section. If it is I could use these when the site is 'off map'. If not I will see about implementing it.

Regards
Stephen :-)

Even when not on the current weather map, your destination and alternate weather reports can be displayed 'on screen' via the 4 - Flight Plan En Route Weather Reports section.

I will however see if I can make this selection process easier or more intuitive.

I have corrected some anomalies with selecting weather reports via the on-screen 4 - Flight Plan En Route Weather Reports section. Clicking anywhere on a displayed (station) weather report will now return to displaying the previous 'en route' station list. From here, you can either navigate as before using the Display Last Group and Display Next Group list options, or you can click on the Return to Main Menu option to display the main weather report menu.

The 4 - Flight Plan En Route Weather Reports section can be used even when you only have specified a destination and possibly some alternates.

I have also changed the weather report main menu selection. Now if you select the Destination or one of the Alternate weather reports and that station is not currently on the weather map the software will search the list of Flight Plan En-Route stations, if a match is found the current weather for the remote station will be displayed otherwise it will display the usual Not On Weather Map message.

Hi Stephen,

that sounds good, thank you!

I tried the Flight Plan Enroute Weather Reports (with 4.61.3) and found that they do work fine with Live Weather, even when outside the weather map.
But with Historic Weather on the "Select Required Weather Report" page it says [not updated] when outside the map and when choosing the Destination (outside the map) it says "No METAR reported". I updated the weather several times to no avail.
It seems to work fine with World Weather as well but not with Historic Weather.
Could you take a look at this?

Thanks

I have posted OpusFSI Beta Version 4.61.4 with the above improvements, I will look into the Historic weather reports.

I can confirm the Historic weather option does not extract the flight plan station METARs, I will see if I can modify it to append them as in Live and World Weather. If I can I will just repost the beta with an amendment.

The OpusFSI Beta 4.61.4 was updated (reposted) after 09:55 Zulu with the following addition...

The flight plan en-route reports and new off-map weather reports now work with Historic weather in addition to Live and World Weather Theme data.

Stephen, have you been adding terrain-related wind effects on the quiet?

I'm not sure what aircraft I was in, but it was fairly small/light when I approached a ridge of fairly substantial hills and got a sudden updraught that immediately sent me back in time to my gliding days. Coincidence?

This was in P3Dv2. I've never really explored the gliding/thermals options in P3D (or FSX really, for that matter) - are they built in to P3D and I simply haven't noticed, or have you started adding code?

Adam.

Just coincidence unless a local METAR reported blustery conditions or the GRIB forecast indicated changing conditions, or there were any site specific effects brought into play. I do intende looking into adding terrain related effects including thermal lift and sink effects in a forthcoming beta. I'm also looking to add visibility smoothing to the cloud smoothing to attempt to stop sudden visibility changes, and also improve the Live View updates.

Of course it is possible LM have improved their Thermal and Turbulence Effects factoring in the terrain. You will have to check their upgrade notes for that.

Oooh ... you're such a killjoy LOL!

I must admit the the terrain effects sound awesome. I'd love to have a decent gliding experience in P3D. I've rarely dabbled with it in the past, as RL gliding is so much a "seat of the pants" thing that I feel I'd be hugely disappointed.

Prepar3D v3

With the release of Lockheed Martin's Prepar3D v3 we are now concentrating on incorporating the new weather related PDK functions into our OpusPDK Interface and also using the corrected WeatherRequestCloudState SimConnect function to provide an OpusFSI Weather Radar (WX Radar) feature.

We will provide our own top down WX Radar Map and also provide a simple WX Radar Interface to allow 3rd parties to control and extract our hi-res WX Radar data. Our WX Radar data will also make use of our detailed internal Live Weather Map and GRIB atmospheric data.

This work is taking precedence over the OpusFSI Terrain Mapping feature which is near completion and will be provided as most likely either as part of the same development cycle or following on shortly after the Prepar3D v3 upgrade(s).

Hi Stephen,

That was quick... Wink I've tried the existing version (latest beta) in V3 and it works just fine with the exception of the PDK DLL. Camera control seems to revert to "legacy" mode, but it works. Great news about the WX radar!

Fab news, if its going to take a little bit of time to do, could you release a beta that recognises the v3 install and the pdk dll first please, so we can enjoy the opus we already have in full before the new stuff hits us :) I imagine that PMDG users will be most affected by this addition, so are you liaising with PMDG already so they can make any necessary adjustments to their a/c to take advantage? :) Cheers K

Did you set up the OpusPDK Interface afresh for v3. That is, edit the v3 DLL.XML and copy the OpusPDK.DLL into the new v3 Modules folder?

Hi Stephen,

Yes, I copied the DLL to "modules" and included it in the new DLL.xml, and also adjusted the path in the configuration dialog. However, it looks like the sim isn't using it (the best quick test is to pan manually and then select a camera - with PDK, the view pans smoothly to the camera, and without it, the view snaps instantly to the target direction).

The weather depends entirely on just the current METAR reports so just check the generated LWA Map and various reports. You will find they all agree very well indeed with the actual RW weather. We even use the LWA Map to check real world flying conditions as its very accurate.

Make sure you set all weather defaults, check your settings, check your weather 'before' flight, and make use of all generated maps and reports. Use the default NOAA server for the most up to date METARs. You should also be wary of the ASN bootstrap DLL. OpusFSI will not get the weather wrong inside the sim unless not set up correctly. You only need to check the LWA Map and generated reports, including the actual downloaded METARs to convince yourself of that. It should be good enough for real world weather monitoring!

Prepar3D v3 WX Radar Feature ...

We are making good progress with the OpusFSI WX Radar feature for Prepar3D v3 systems. At present we have prepared all data ready to extract the cloud state data from the sim which will then be combined with OpusFSI cloud, precipitation, and other atmospheric data in the OpusFSI weather map. We have factored in all WX Radar parameters such as tilt angles, beam widths, sweep angles, curvature of the earth, etc., and are almost at the stage of testing the new 'repaired' RequestCloudState SimConnect function in P3D v3. I will keep you informed of our progress.

In a past life (as a young man), I actually spent 6 years working as an engineer specialising in airborne radar. So none of this is rocket science so to speak Big smile

Of course we will provide simple access and full control over everything for any third-party developers to request and access the generated WX Radar data. I will also provide an OpusFSI WX Radar map for people not having WX Radar in their sim aircraft.

Prepar3D v3 WX Radar Feature ...

We are still making very good progress with the new OpusFSI WX Radar feature for Prepar3D Version 3 systems. At present we have almost finished all the WX Radar software and prepared a simple DLL interface for third parties. We are presently adding support for an optional secondary radar beam and tilt angle to supplement the main beam's scan. We will soon be upgrading our compiler and tool set to test out the corrected Prepar3D Version 3 'RequestCloudState' SimConnect function. As soon as I have any images I will post them either here or in a dedicated sticky topic.

To aid in-house (alpha) and beta testing I will allow users to view ...

The WX Radar data in the usual coloured (black, green, yellow, red, magenta) map form.
The WX Radar data in a monochromatic (in grey scale) map form.
The 'Cloud State' data map (showing the actual cloud density returns in a grey scale).

All generated map images have a fixed 512 x 256 pixel resolution and are stored in the \OpusFSI\Weather\Radar folder for third-party users to access. The 'grey-scale' map can be used to simply extract raw WX Radar data.

OpusFSI WX Radar Data for P3Dv3 ...

We are still making very good progress on the WX Radar feature and should be able to complete 95% of the software and third-party DLL interface using the current P3Dv3 Cloud State data. It looks like this SimConnect data is still lacking in some respects. We will prepare a detailed report with images of the returned Cloud State data for Lockheed Martin, armed with this they should be able to correct any shortcomings in a future P3D update.

We have been working on improving the weather interpolation algorithm giving higher priority and importance to the immediate area sorrounding Met station sites. We've tried to be a bit more intelligent with how we handle the reported surface conditions and smooth out the data between the reporting stations. You should see a slightly better representation on the LWA maps and more consistent agreement with the weather in the sim. I will post a quick beta when finished testing in-house.

Regarding the WX Radar feature we are still preparing the software to generate reports to Lockheed Martin so they can correct and improve the cloud state data. These features will be included in the FSISERVER program so users will be able to have full control over the WX Radar and also examine all data to detect any anomalies.

OpusFSI Weather Report Windows ...

I am looking to provide an option to display weather reports within an OpusFSI Weather Report window as an alternative option to using the simulators text menu. The FSISERVER will allow up to nine Weather Report windows to be opened and sized/positioned anywhere on a multi screen system. The user will be able to change the font style and size for the reports to suit their screen resolution.

OpusFSI LWA Maps ...

We are investigating allowing Navigation Aids and Waypoints to be displayed on the LWA Maps and also allowing the maps to be used without enabling the live weather engine (no weather info displayed).

I have posted OpusFSI Beta Version 4.68.0, see Announcements.

I will look to expand on the above OpusFSI Weather Reports, adding further useful messages and possibly allowing them to be displayed on a connected client system for those users that do not have a second screen on the main system.

In the meantime I will looking into adding nav aids and waypoint options to the LWA Maps.

I have posted OpusFSI Beta Version 4.69.0, see Announcements.

This beta provides new options for the LWA Map and WX Maps allowing Navaids and Waypoints to be plotted.
