I currently have UTX, GEX North America and GEX Tropics and the backup installed on my SSD. I see there are some upgrades to consider but, my question is how can I transfer those items to an HHD drive I shall call F without screwing up my system?

Uninstall and reinstall your GEX regions to another location, that is the easiest way to move them.
You can also manually move the region install folders and when the interface is opened it will request a browse to the region folder location(s). That is another way to move the database if you understand the directory location and know how to move it manually. Uninstall/reinstall is the easiest way if you don't.
As for updates... after reinstall or moving the directories manually and running the interface to locate the region directories....
The patches (click CHECK FOR UPDATES in the interface) automatically locate the region install of your GEX product through the registry.
Simply make sure your regions are ENABLED in FSX and click the check for updates button.
They system will present you with links to the update patches. Close the interface, download the patches and install them. Once complete, open the interface allow it to run the automated startup routine and then simply ENABLE your regions in FSX.
This is all outlined on page 9 of the GEX manual (Help button) under:
