Is it normal to need to enable GEX Scenery for every session of FSX? I loaded FSX last evening to a saved flight cold and dark I completed the day before. The sim took an unusual amount of time on scenery loadup. Then I got a status line Readjusting Scenery Textures. When the sim loaded in before I even took off I noticed it looked default bland. I exited the sim, open the GEX Manager. Nothing was enabled. So, I went through the process and enabled UT NA and then UT NA UTX because I also have UT NA. After that I open my UTX Configuration Utility and got a Scenery.CFG not in expected location error. Is there anything that could have caused this error?

No, it is not normal to have to enable GEX options every time the interface is open. They should only need to be enabled once and the files are sent to FSX. After that the graphic files stay in the simulator and the interface need not be rerun unless you wish to disable and restore the default FSX flies that the interface backs up.
It reads to me you are not right clicking the installers or the interface shortcut and selecting "Run as Administrator" which is typically required (especially with Windows10 regardless of UAC settings) with many different product installers as well as interface controls or the files may not be properly installed, and later sent to the sim as well as the interface can malfunction and not be able to read/write to configuration files, which is why when you open the interface the options are shown as disabled when you enabled them previously. We are not UTX here, just GEX. GEX simply supports UTX by adding textures when UTX is present so their product blends better with ours. GEX does not edit or change any simulator control files such as scenery.cfg or terrain.cfg however UTX does. You may be experiencing the same issue with the UTX product for the same reason. That, I can't say but with GEX it appears from your description the interface does not have administrator rights when running in order to work properly. |

I have same question. I have GEX loaded as per normal, got the pfd manual and the shortcut. Enabled it in GEX interface(shortcut). I went into the GEX interface today and it had GEX north America Disabled but before that it did a backup. I enabled it again but every time I look in the GEX interface the samething happens. So what you are saying is the first time it was enabled it copied it's textures into UTX and they are still there even though it looks disabled in the GEX interface. Am I correct. Pete

No, incorrect.
You are not running the GEX interface as ADMINISTRATOR which is why the interface can not properly read/write files to the system. It may also not properly send the textures to the simulator. So, right click the GEX interface icon and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. Then make the selections and ENABLE. Once complete when you close and reopen that interface it will remain/read ENABLED for the selections you previously made. But you must always run the interface AS ADMINISTRATOR Once that is confirmed THEN there is no reason to open the interface again unless you wish to DISABLE or make a change. The files will have been sent to their proper target locations in the sim and will remain there until you make a change in the interface. That also includes the UTX options. This is all in the GEX Manual (HELP button in the interface) and is also listed here in the forum under pinned topics. |

Ok Nick. Did some more reading in the forum and as you say I found the answer. My computer was dumped and Windows 10 x64 was reloaded but I have an issue as all my files are now read only. Not your issue but has caused me some issues. Have done everything suggested by Microsoft such as taking control as administrator and changing the read only but it reverts back. got to talk to a computer tech. and see what settings in the registry are giving me these problems. Nothing to do with any software installed but I have no control. I did get this to work thank god. Computers get to be a pain sometimes. Sorry for the post, the answer was in front of me. Cheers. Pete

I'm not sure what is going on with that or how such a thing could happen. That does read you may need direct technical computer support to find out the cause to get the system repaired/reinstalled and back to working normally.

Yes Nick, working on that now. Hope to have it solved today. It's a real pain when you can't modify a file that is not working and you know how to fix it but you can't get permission no matter how you set your permissions , administrator etc.. hopefully all will be back to normal today. Thanks for all your help and of course patience. Cheers. Pete STAY SAFE
