OpusFSX Beta Version 2.91.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v291_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

This is the first beta to include the planned Weather (Cloud) Smoothing and associated options for the future version 3.00 release. In this beta, the new Weather Smoothing option will attempt to preserve all cloud layers and coverage surrounding the aircraft. The extent of the preservation zone increases with increased elevation. All Weather Smoothing is disabled when the aircraft is within 64km (40 miles) of the specified Destination.

Please see the Weather (Cloud) Smoothing and Coming Soon topics for details.

OpusFSX Beta Version 2.92.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v292_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Minor adjustments to the Weather Smoothing option. Added a 'Thunderstorms Require TS Descriptor' option to the Weather General Preferences dialog. When set, this option only produces active thunderstorm (CB) clouds when the TS descriptor is specified within the METAR statement.

OpusFSX Beta Version 2.93.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v293_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Includes a much improved WINTER (Weather Interpolation) algorithm which improves the overall weather smoothing and accuracy/consistency of the simulator's ATIS reports. This upgrade also prepares the way for future upgrades and enhancements.

The OpusFSX METAR list has now been updated which now includes 8,320 possible METAR stations around the globe.

The Dynamic Weather Theme size options (default and maximum) have been added to the Weather dialog. The default theme size covers an area 512km x 512km (320 x 320 miles, or 276 x 276 nm), and the maximum theme size covers an area of 992km x 992km (620 x 620 miles, or 536 x 536 nm). The maximum size themes will be extended further to 1024km x 1024km in a subsequent beta release.

Regards
Stephen

P.S.

This beta release is still undergoing extensive in-house testing which will continue throughout the coming week. It is a fairly long process to retest everything considering the above changes. I have released the 2.93 beta now since I thought you may benifit from the updated METAR station list and the new WINTER algorithm with its general improvements. Just to be safe I have also added a link on our Downloads page to download the previous version 2.92 Beta. If you do revert back please remember to recheck all your Configuration and especially your Weather settings.

OpusFSX Beta Version 2.94.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v294_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

The internal weather map has been enlarged to 1280km x 1280km (800 x 800 miles, or 691 x 691 nm) and the maximum dynamic weather theme size has been increased to 1024km x 1024km (640 x 640 miles, or 553 x 553 nm). The LWE weather reports will now privide perfect long range ATIS out to a distance of approximately 640km (about 400 miles or 345nm).

Cloud icing has been introduced which the LWE will automatically set within the cloud to none, low, medium, high, or severe depending on the ambient temperature within the cloud, the cloud type, and the cloud moisture level. Some icing is likely to occur when the ambient temperature is between -20C and 0C, with more noticeable effects when the ambient cloud temperature is between -12C and -8C. All calculated icing effects require valid GRIB forecast data.

The Weather Reports will now show the target ambient temperature at your specified Cruise altitude immediately after the targeted wind direction and speed. This information is displayed in the form 'Cruise ddd/ss tempC'.

A 'Toggle Weather Update On/Off' shortcut option has been added to allow users to enable or disable live weather updates using a shortcut joystick button or key press.

A problem saving the 'Reduced Upper Visibility Limit' and 'Ignore Reduced Visibility' weather prferences settings has been corrected. Weather (Cloud) Smoothing has now been renamed to just Cloud Smoothing.

TrackIR head movement limits have been introduced. The limits for specific aircraft types can be set via the TrackIR Limits button in the Configure dialog. The Live Camera option must be enabled (ticked) to assign these limits. You do not need to enable the TIR device to assign the head movement limits.

Anomaly corrected in the new weather interpolation (WINTER) algorithm that could affect the cloud bases in non-METAR zones. The temperature dependence of CB heights has been adjusted slightly. Improved the overall integration of the cloud smoothing software with the dynamic weather theme creation. Auto cirrus conditions have been adjusted to take into account the larger area covered by the internal weather map.

There is a known reported problem with these latest betas at aerodromes with high elevations (> 4000 feet) which result in wind and temp targets which FSX cannot meet. The end result is rising temps and static winds as you climb.

I have fixed the problem and am just carrying out some further tests before posting the fix in Beta 2.94.2. Further testing will be undertaken during the week to make sure the problem has been well and truly nailed.

Includes a quick fix for the problem mentioned in the above post. I will be continuing to test and refine the solution during the next week.

Regards
Stephen

P.S.

So far (as from 19th March) I have completed tests at eight airports with elevations ranging from -7 feet up to 7000 feet, all wind and temperature targets have been correct so far.

Cirrostratus are now given precedence over cirrocumulus under most conditions. Slight adjustments have been made to the depths of all alto and cirro type clouds. The conditions for altostratus and altocumulus have also been modified to take into account different surface conditions and likelihood of approaching weather fronts.

The upper temperature and wind targets have now been tested with airport elevations ranging from -7 to 7000 feet. The auto cirrus calculations have also been modified and retested. All reported wind gusts are no longer averaged in cells containing more than one METAR, the maximum reported wind gust is now always assigned to the cell.

An anomaly within the forced recovery checks has been corrected which now prevents unecessary forced recovery weather updates.

The METAR station list (the OpusFSX_Stations.dat file) has been corrected to use the NOAA latitude, longitude, and elevation data for all non-FSX airports. The previous list contained errors in the data propogated from the original FSX station list which seems to include inaccurate data for all non-airport type stations.

Height limits on cloud precipitation have been tightened.

Weather checks for specified Destination airport modified. Checks on the high altitude limits for precipitation have been improved. New Command Shortcuts have been added to cycle the camera views forward (next) and backward (last), tested using V and Shift-V keys respectively.

Three levels of wind shear have been introduced at low elevations (< 4000 feet AGL). Wind shear is only associated with reported thunderstorm (TS) or squall (SQ) conditions and requires reported surface winds of at least 20 knots.

Where appropriate a Slight, Moderate, or Severe Wind Shear warning is appended at the end of the QNH pressure line in the Opus Local, Destination, and Alternate Weather Reports, just before the reported surface wind conditions. Moderate wind shear levels require surface wind speeds of 30 knots or more, severe wind shear levels require surface wind speeds of at least 40 knots and warm conditions (surface temperatures of at least 20C).

OpusFSX Beta Version 2.95.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v295_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Spelling error corrected in the DHM dialog. Addon menu option to Load Dynamic Weather has been renamed to Update Dynamic Weather to help prevent confusion. The procedure for updating the Aircraft.cfg files has been updated.

The Camera dialog now includes an OK button which will automatically save all your changes before closing the dialog. Hence the new OK button provides a 'Save and Quit' option as opposed to the 'Save and Continue' option the 'Save All Cameras' button provides.

All TrackIR Limits are now named rather than assigned to specific aircraft types. Camera views can now reference a named set of TIR Limits. The same named limits can be assigned to multiple camera views. All TrackIR Limits are now selected and edited via the TIR Limits button in the Camera dialog. When selecting camera views a small 't' symbol is used in the selection box to highlight camera views which have named TIR limits assigned.

The camera Default option is now automatically reset when camera views are cloned (i.e. when pressing the Add New Camera button). The cloning now includes the new TIR Limits options. Clicking on the Set button in the TIR Limits dialog will now automatically stop any camera motion.

Users should check all their camera view definitions and remove all unwanted Default settings leaving just a single default camera view for each aircraft group.

Regards
Stephen

Work In Progress ...

a.  Camera views Import and Export options.
b.  Shortcut command to toggle any Opus Windowed views on and off.
c.  Adding a Nearest Met Station weather report window to show the nearest 5 Met station METARs to your current location.

OpusFSX Beta Version 3.01.0 is now available for download on our website.

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Camera Import and Export options included. These options allow users to save and load groups of camera definitions stored in named .CDF (Camera Definition Files). Two Opus CDFs are supplied with this upgrade, Opus_PMDG_737NGX.CDF and Opus_RealAir_Legacy.CDF containing camera definitions for the PMDG 737NGX and RealAir Lancair Legacy aircraft respectively. Camera definitions must have a unique name to be imported, any definitions matching existing camera names will not be imported.

A Disable View option has been added to the Camera dialog which can be used to disable or enable a camera view for selection and display. Changing this field for Windowed View types will force the Camera Definitions within all aircraft.cfg files to be updated.

The shortcut button and key assignments used to cycle the views forward and backward will now only cycle between identical view modes. That is, between the same virtual cockpit, 2D cockpit, or External Aircraft camera views for the user's currently selected aircraft. This cycling only effects the shortcut commands, it has no effect if you have assigned the same button or key to multiple camera views within the Camera dialog. These will still cycle between all relevent camera views irrespective of the view type.

The specified Destination and Alternates are no longer cleared automatically when the wheels touch down to prevent loosing the specified ICAO codes on bouncy takeoffs.

Regards
Stephen

OpusFSX Beta Version 3.02.0 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v302_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

The first phase of flight planning assistance has been included. Users may enter or paste their flight plan, or a list of ICAO codes into the edit box provided at the top of the Weather dialog. In this phase of development, all recognised met station ICAO codes will be extracted from the user's flight plan and appended where necessary to the LWE's download list.

A new weather report window option to display the 'Flight Plan En Route Weather Reports' has been added to the reports Main Menu. This option will list all identified met stations extracted from the flight plan. Select the required station from the list to display the current reported weather at that site.

If you enter a flight plan then the last station listed in the plan will automatically be assigned as your Destination provided you haven't already specified your Destination in the Weather dialog. Similarly when the flight plan cruise altitude list is implemented, the highest altitude listed will be assigned as your Max Cruise Altitude provided you have already specified it.

The Weather dialog now includes a 'Disable Weather Update on Startup' option. When ticked the LWE will remain dormant until the users forces a weather update either via the Addon menu or via the Update Weather button in the dialog. This option allows users to enter their flight details and adjust the weather settings prior to generating and updating the weather at the start of their flight.

Imported camera definitions will now be appended if their configured names and assigned aircraft list does not match any of the existing camera views. All camera views with matching names and aircraft lists will be updated using the new imported camera view, the user's key assignments are all preserved during the update.

Remember, ALL your camera definitions for your main server system are stored in the FSXSERVER.CAM (or P3DSERVER.CAM) file. When planning on importing camera views you can always rename this file then import the views to check them over, if they are to your liking then rename the CAM file back and import the views again to append them to your existing views. We may come up with an 'Undo Import' option in the near future.

The second phase of the flight planning assistance software decodes the standard Navigraph Navdata Navaids and Waypoints text files for use in identifying all nav aids and general waypoints within the user's flight plan. The standard <SIM>\Navigraph\Navdata\ path is assumed for these files but users may Browse for these locations on FSX and Prepar3D systems should they be located elsewhere.

Cloud precipitation ammended to try and ensure surfaces in FSX/P3D that would normally show surface water will do so no matter what cloud formations are present above.

The Destination and Max Cruise Altitude boxes within the Weather dialog now change to a green colour after data has been entered.

The number of supported joysticks through the SimConnect interface has been extended from 6 to 8. Finally a problem with the reordering of defined TrackIR limits has been corrected.

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Lat/Lon fixes can be used to specify the point of origin and destination within flight plans. The nearest four Met stations within 128km (80 miles) of a navigation point are now added to the download list. After downloading, all the non-reporting Met stations are now removed from the list. The Flight Plan En Route Weather Report now displays the navigation points associated with each listed Met station, these are appended to each line as [navpnt].

At present only the first associated navigation point is shown even though the same Met station may be common to a multiple, normally consecutive, group of navigation points.

If a user changes the flight plan the weather report may list Met stations as (Not Updated) indicating that a weather update is needed in order to request and download the new METARs.

The Flight Plan Options dialog now lists all identified navigation points extracted from the user's flight plan. The user must have pressed the OK button at least once before the specified flight plan is decoded, but after that all identified points will be listed for the user to examine along with their Lat/Lon coordinates and general type.

Corrected a problem decoding negative latitude coordinates listed in the OpusFSX_MetStations_Additions.txt file. Entering a fight plan now automatically changes the Destination ICAO code in the Weather dialog. All non-reporting Met stations located within the current weather map are now removed from the fligh plan list, they were previously labelled as 'Not Updated'. The En Route Weather Reports for Met stations that are outside the current weather map now show the Cruise wind and temperature data for the Met station's location. Stabilisation has been disabled for the specified destination in an attempt to help the sim select the correct runway in use from greater distances.

Regards
Stephen

P.S.

Things I didn't have time to complete ...

At the moment the station reports displayed via the Flight Plan En Route Weather Report menu will not update automatically as you fly. Also the destination station will still show the 'Static XXX/XX XXC' field in these reports even though this is not relevent in this beta. These will be added in the next beta while we continue to test and work on improving the Destination long range FSX ATIS accuracy etc.

OpusFSX Beta Version 3.03.5 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v303_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

Flight Plan En Route weather reports now update as you pass through the weather cells and any station report for your specified Destination no longer show the 'Static XXX/XX XXC' data. Delays for camera view changes increased slightly. GRIB data can also be used when importing from a METAR file.

The interpolation, weather update and injection procedures for the Destination and Alternate sites has been changed along with all wind handling and smoothing procedures. We have now combined our excellent Weather Interpolator with perfect geodesic mapping within the sim, accurate to a few feet over the entire 800 x 800 mile weather map.

All the changes have been aimed at enforcing the Destination weather including all surface conditions and coaxing the simulator into accepting the RW surface conditions at your specified destination at much greater distances than before. In house tests now show the destination weather is accurate out to about 240km (about 130nm or 150 miles), in some instances even out to 270km (about 146nm or 167 miles). As a result of the new weather updating methods far fewer updates are now required as you approach your destination.

Navigraph Navdata in the form of the Navaids.txt and Waypoints.txt files are now supplied as part of the OpusFSX installation. These files will be automatically installed into your <SIM>\Navigraph\Navdata folder whenever you need to use nav data and the files do not exist. These files supplied by Navigraph provide navigation data for those who want to make use of the flight planning assistant and en route weather reports, but do not fly the big jets and hence do not have any Navigraph, or similar, data on their systems.

Flight Plan En Route Weather Reports do not show the 'Static' or Stabilised weather information.

Corrected a problem with the Destination weather checks. The previous beta 3.03.5 posting would update the weather every 16km unless the Spy window was open, sorry about that. Embarrassed

OpusFSX Beta Version 3.04.0 is now available for download on our website.

The user specified flight plan is now saved on program exit and initialised on program start up. The Flight Plan Options dialog has been changed to include 'Process the Flight Plan' and 'Done' button options. The Process option will decode the current flight plan string in the Flight Plan text box and display the result in the Identified Navigation Points box. Press Done or close the dialog when finished. Two letter country codes have been appended to the navigation aids and waypoints, where they exist, within the navigation points list.

To delete a flight plan simply open the Flight Plan Options dialog, delete the flight plan text and press the Process button.

I have corrected a problem decoding flight plans containing duplicate navigation aids and waypoints, previous beta would not delete the duplicate under certain circumstances.

The default 'Adjust Options Automatically' option combined with 'Use Maximum Stabilisation' option no longer alters the 'Stabilised GRIB Data' option within the Weather Download Options dialog. The 'Stabilised GRIB Data' option which prevents the upper winds from changing during the flight must now be set manually by the user. The recommended setting is OFF.

Modified the flight plan decoding algorithm to prevent any possible confusion over the user's points of departure and destination. After each weather update the LWE now generates a test or dummy OpusFlightReport.txt file in preperation for the next phase of development for the FP Assistant.

Corrected an anomaly with the handling of TCU and CB cloud depths which may have resulted in some strange behaviour of FSX, displaying rain at high altitude and trying to depict distant rain fall with those strange looking vertical cloud structures.

Importing from a Camera Definition File (CDF) will now automatically save your current camera views and copy or backup your current CAM file into the <system>_UNDO.CAM file. For example, when importing into your main system's camera views on an FSX system your current definitions will be saved in FSXSERVER_UNDO.CAM. To 'undo' the camera import just delete your FSXSERVER.CAM file and rename the UNDO file, removing the '_UNDO' prefix.

OpusFSX_MetStation_Additions_Australian.txt file included with installation. Rename this file as described in the file header and enable the Use VATSIM for Missing Data options. Most of these met stations are not found at the NOAA site so keep an eye on the METAR day and Zulu time codes just in case the VATSIM METARs are out of date.

Problem updating the weather after first running the FSXSERVER program and requesting a weather update before starting FSX or P3D corrected.

Problem with surface wind directions at certain departure locations corrected.

The direction (N,NNE,NE,..) and bearing (XXX degrees) is now appended to all the site descriptions within the Opus weather reports immediately after the distance to the site. The 'true' bearing is calculated following the great circle path in the proper orthodromic fashion. Both the general heading and bearing to the site is shown.

For example,

Dest: EGCC Manchester Intl, 85km, 46nm, NW 313

This beta generates the initial version of the OpusFlightReport text file in the OpusFSX\Themes folder. This flight report provides details of all cruise winds, cruise temperatures and local weather reports at each of the navigation points. This beta does not include the averaged cruise wind and cruise temperature data.

The NavData is now reloaded each time you change the folder location or press the new Reload button option.

Airways data has been added to the FP Assistant. The FP Assistant will now recognise the Airway provided the entry point is specified, also if you have specified both entry and exit points in the flight plan (usually done) then the FP Assistant will replace the Airway with the list of points en route and provide weather information and upper winds/temps for each of those navigation points.

This release version includes the current beta development with the following additions and corrections. Engine status checks have now been added to the DHM vibrations control. I have also corrected a problem that would occur when an invalid or non-existant Destination code was entered into the Weather dialog.

Default weather update frequency and distance are now 30 minutes and 160km respectfully. Surface temperature limits for certain cumulus cloud layers lowered slightly.

Menu Report options to Show the OpusWeather (METARs), OpusWeatherReport (GRIB Data), OpusFlightReport (Flight Plan), and OpusSidStarReport (future SIDs and STARs) text file reports within the Notepad window have been added. These reports are updated after each weather update. Windows will remember the size and position of the Notepad window on the screen (the sim must be in windowed mode to see it) each time you close the window by clicking on the 'X' in the top right hand corner.

Bracketed wind and temperature averages have now been added to the OpusFlightReport text file.

GRIB data handling and upper wind and temp target injection changed to improve the resolution of all upper wind and temperature targets throughout the weather map and hence throughout the injected weather region.

N.B.

Prior to installing this upgrade ...

Due to the decoding changes users must delete all files except the degrib.exe program from within their OpusFSX\GRIB sub-folder. Do NOT delete your OpusFSX installation folder, only the decoded contents within the GRIB sub-folder.

OpusFSX Beta Version 3.10.4 is now available for download on our website.

Remember when installing the OpusFSX_v310_Beta.msi file you must uninstall your current version before installing the new version (do not delete your previous \OpusFSX installation folder).

After installing please check all the settings in your Configure and Weather dialogues. You can download from http://www.opussoftware.co.uk/opusfsi/downloads.htm

The Spy window is no longer closed when you open the Weather dialog allowing users to monitor the progress of weather updates. To monitor the weather download simply open the Spy window, open the Weather dialog, check your optional Flight Plan, and specified Destination, and Max Cruise Altitude options, then click on the Update Weather button and follow the progress of the download and weather generation in the Spy window.

The maximum number of assigned joystick buttons and key sequences in Live Camera has been increased from 6 and 32 respectfully to 8 and 64.

The OpusFlightReport now lists the original flight plan followed by the navigation point list.

N.B.

Prior to installing this upgrade if you have a version older than Beta 3.10.3 installed ...

Due to the decoding changes users must delete all files except the degrib.exe program from within their OpusFSX\GRIB sub-folder. Do NOT delete your OpusFSX installation folder, only the decoded contents within the GRIB sub-folder.

Our GRIB decoding format has changed which means the data files that are generated from the extracted and decoded GRIB data are no longer compatible with the new version. These files are generated by our FSDECODER program.

If you leave these files on the system then the LWE may decide that your GRIB data is already up to date and simply attempt to read the old files. This will result in completely erroneous wind data as the files are in a different format.

Hence, to ensure correct operation you must ...

1. Make sure you uninstall before installing the new beta version.

2. Delete all but the degrib.exe file in your OpusFSX\GRIB sub-folder. You could get away with deleting all .dat files. Simply highlight them in explorer and press the delete key.

Stephen
