I have 16 G of Trident Z NEO : F4-3600C16D-16GTZN....CL16-16-16-36 1.35V.

If someone could give some advice on whether or not it is advisable or not to expand the ram to 32 G. by buying exactly the same as I have above, with the same CL etc.or is it not wise to add ram that is not matched, even though these are supposedly the same ?

Building the 10900K.

Hi Brian,

In order of preference:

1) all sticks purchased as a matched set.  This is always better as they have been benched by the manufacturer with all sticks together able to run as a package at the named timings.

2) same manufacturer model number with same named timings (i.e. what you are posing in your question. -- They may be "the same" on the sticker, however at closer inspection of the sub-timings they may or may not be identical to the first matched pair you already have).  There may be a bit more tweaking of the memory speed/timing needed to get them stable in an overclocked environment.  This is less likely to be a problem if you are not overclocking and just running at the default processor speeds.

3) same named timings from same manufacturer, but a different model number (but same or comparable class/quality)

4) same named timings from a different manufacturer (but same or comparable class/quality)

Be aware that as you increase the number of sticks from two to four, you will quite likely have to bump up your memory voltages to run them stably, particularly if you are planning on overclocking.

Is it worth it to move up from 16GB to 32GB?  Only you can judge that one.  I did it for "future insurance." Right now P3D V5.2 as I am running it does not come even close at all to using all the available RAM.  What dabbling I have done in MSFS does not currently utilize that amount of RAM either.  BUT I certainly don't have to worry about the future demands within the useful lifespan of this build, either.

If you are using the build with other software with high-memory demands like photo editing or CAD software, etc. then that can tip the scale towards expanding your available memory while the "same" memory is still available.

Bottom line, it's a give-and-take proposition and you'll just have to decide if its worth it given your needs and wallet.

No matter what you decide, TEST the sticks individually (Memtest86, current free version) and then as a group with all sticks installed before installing the operating system.  Many headaches down the line will be avoided by KNOWING the memory sticks are good from the beginning.

Best,
Don

Thank you very much Don.

Basically I will only be running the 3 projectors off this new computer, So it seems the advice you have given, pretty much matches what I had previously thought.

Nice to hear that 16 gig should do the trick.I think we will keep what I have.

Next trick is to see if these damned 3080's ever come down in price here in Oz.

Many thanks............Brian W.
