    Posted: March-02-2010 at 8:36pm

THIS ISSUE IS STILL VALID AND CAN NOT BE FIXED WITH A GEX OR GEP3D "UPDATE".

IT REQUIRES A MANUAL CHANGE TO THE UTX CONFIGUATION AS OUTLINED BELOW.

This only effects UTX USA with GEX-GEP3D/UTX patch applied -and- if you use the Rail Yards 'enabled' in UTX USA

It has come to our attention that the UTX Rail Yard texture typically used in the USA is not appearing correctly. This is due to an assignment difference between what UTX USA and Canada/Alaska/Europe uses for Rail Yards. They call different texture names although those textures are similar in nature. We made the change for USA assuming the same texture was used for all of them however this is not the case and easy to fix/change

The easiest way to correct that is to use the UTX interface and reassign the UT_RAILYARD to UTLOTDry.bmp which will call the texture you are used to seeing.

  1. Open the UTX USA Tool, click ADVANCED, Modify Texture Mappings for UT Features
  2. Bullet in OTHER
  3. Click UT_RAILYARD
  4. Click Create New Custom Texture Set click OK on the next box
  5. When the box appears, fill out the information exactly as shown

ALTERNATE: you can use the file UTLotWet.bmp if you rather have a bit of vegetation look to it or even mix the WET/DRY for seasonal changes. Simply use the word WET in the file name where ever the word DRY is used. The dry file is like a dry concrete/gravel and the wet file would look like it has more green in it mixed with the concrete/gravel.

This image is an example of mixing the WET/DRY railyard texture

  1. Click SAVE

Making sure the UT_RAILYARD is highlighted, in the DROPDOWN select the name of the saved texture profile, in this case UT_Railyard_FIX and click SAVE Modification and then click DONE

You DO NOT need to do this for Canada or Alaska! Since like Europe UTX Canada/Alaska uses the correct wet/dry Railyard textures.

Thats it!   All fixed   Big%20smile

What about UTX Alaska? Is that OK as is, like Canada?

Alaska is the same as Canada, its fine, which is why I said..

This only effects UTX USA.

Good thing I waited a few minutes, as I was about to post about the very same topic. I will implement the work-around, but do you plan to eventually supply the correct texture so we can revert to the default configuration?

Nope, we dont

The correct texture is UTLotDry.bmp and UTLotWet.bmp as far as we are concerned. I think what has happened here is UTX implemented that for all other UT products after USA was made and never implemented that change for the USA.

Just so you understand, ..  the DEFAULT texture UTLot is a duplicate with a slight color variation of the default UTLotWet/Dry

If anything the UTX USA tool should use the same 2 types the others do and doesnt. So this fixes it.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I will copy the instructions you have supplied and archive them should I ever need to do a reinstallation.

Sir Nick,

Sanity check needed.  I have those "Replacement Railroad and Railyard Textures for Ultimate Terrain X" that the FSWC guys made.  They get installed using a "Setup.exe" file...not a copy\paste type install.  So I'm not 100% sure just WHAT they replaced in UTX.

Is it safe to assume that the replacement files they install are the same filenames that your instructions above referenced?  Just want to make sure I don't hose UTX by doing the above stuff AFTER I have installed the Railroad and Railyard textures.

I included a cut\paste below of the Readme file that came with the alternate textures, in case you aren't familiar with it.

Rick

-------------------START of README---------------

REPLACEMENT RAILROAD AND RAILYARD TEXTURES FOR ULTIMATE TERRAIN X

BY PAUL WHEELER

This readme is best viewed with word wrap set to on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

This is a set of replacement textures for all the railroads and railyards in Ulitimate Terrain X USA, Canada and EU.

They replace the single track default railroads with a double track railroad with matching railyard textures. There are also custom made track encasements for both wet and dry climates and hard winter.

Installation:
-------------

Run 'setup.exe' and follow the instructions carefully.

Installation if FTX is also Installed
-------------------------------------

If you also own Orbx's Full Terrain X then we recommend you install these textures with FTX mode off.
However, if you wish to run them with FTX mode on then, with FTX mode set to 'on', run a 'UTX Setup Tool' first to ensure the correct UTX entries are in FTX's 'terrain.cfg' and then run this installer.
This method will in no way impact on the workings of FTX or UTX and will enable you to fly in UTX areas with FTX mode set to 'on'.

UNINSTALLATION:
---------------

An uninstall application is provided and can be accessed via the 'Start Menu' or 'Add or Remove Programs'. Alternatively just run the 'setup.exe' again.

While every effort has been made to ensure the quality and compatibility of this package, we do not assume any responsibility should this package damage or harm your PC, FSX, UTX or any other installed software in any way.

----You are installing them at your own risk.----

Although we are associated with FSWaterConfigurator, I or any member of the FSWC team are not obliged to provide official support for this package. However, if you have problems we will do our best to help.

Any feedback, comments, etc. visit us at http://www.fswaterconfigurator.com/forum

Many thanks to Ashton Lawson (aka Str1ker) for the installation package.

If you enjoy these textures, you may enjoy our main FREEWARE package - the water shader editor FSWC.

Go to http://www.fswaterconfigurator.com for more information.

Thanks

Paul.

FSWC did not replace the base railyard texture, just the tracks and what sits on top of the base tile so the addition of that should not effect any change. They replaced the tracks with the rail cars on them, not the base and it automatically edits the terrain.cfg for those track textures.

Anthony and northtexas,

OK, thanks for the clarification.  The word "railyard" was being used in both the UTX filename explanation and the FSWC readme, so I just wanted to make sure what was (or wasn't) going to happen if I applied Nick's instructions above.

I installed the FSWC ones, but didn't care for them and went back to UTX. They double up all the tracks, and seem to kinda take over the scenery. Also, I thought they would add rail cars on the tracks like they show in their pics, but I never saw any.

It's all relative to the user, and can depend on where you are flying in FSX.  So I usually don't say, "This looks better than that", as someone else may not agree with what I like.  If possible with something like the FSWC railyard option, I install it and see what I think.  If I like it, I keep it.  If not, I restore back to what it was before.  I'm also running a 3-wide TH2G monitor setup at 5040 x 1050 with FSX, so "what I see" can be quite a bit different than somebody who may be using a single monitor at a different resolution.

Nick: Sorry for being so dense here, but what is the "GEX/UTX patch" mentioned above?
Is this the replacement railroad textures "patch" from the FSCW site?

Thanks,  Al

Al,

It's the second "check box" item in the GEX USA user interface you use to install the GEX USA textures.  If you have UTX USA\Canada, you can check that box to have GEX USA install new textures for UTX USA\Canada.  It's not a separate patch you have to downlad...it's part of GEX USA itself.

Thanks Falcon. Been some time since I installed GEX-USA/Canada.  So, it is the GEX Enhanced Special Landclass Fix you are talking about. Actually, I had installed all 4 "check boxes".

Al,

What version of GEX are you using for the USA?  The new North America version only has THREE check boxes.  The second one is "GEX for UTX USA or Canada".

Then you can apply Nick's "fixes" from the top post here using the UTX USA settings ONLY.  You don't need to do them for UTX Canada.

Sounds like you haven't upgraded your previous GEX USA\Canada to the new GEX North America yet.

Falcon: I am still with GEX USA/Canada 1.08.  Waiting for an upgrade key from Flight1 as I have the GEX DVD version. Soon I will upgrade to GEX NA 1.09. I guess that explains why I was not in the know - a good excuse I guess.

Thank you,   Al

Anybody know what the character after the W is in the Hard Winter box in the Custom Texture Set Creation (Advanced Users Only) window?

Is that supposed to be the number "1"?

That seems to be some kind of compression image glitch. Its not a character

I replaced the image and added an ALTERNATE version if you want to use both WET/DRY railyard textures for seasonal changes

Is this still necessary with the latest versions of GEX NA and UTX USA installed?

This fix deals with the way UTX works, not GEX, but yes, it is still required

There is no way to correct this with GEX. It would require a change in UTX USA/Canada to change how the yards are used by default.

It was added yesterday before launch of the new product releases

The issue is not GEX... its UTX

The fix upgrades their USA product and makes it use the dry railyards in the southern locations and the wetter railyards in the north as it should and as their Europe/AK product correctly works

This fix makes the UTX USA product work like the UTX Europe and AK products, thats all.

I am seeing neither railroads nor rail yards (I have FSX with both UTX and GEX).  After applying this workaround when I start the UTX Setup Tool I get this warning:

-Missing referenced texture in TERRAIN.CFG "C:\Program Files
(x86)\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator
X\SCENERY\WORLD\TEXTURE\UTLotDry.bmp".

repeated four times altogether.  I triple-checked that I followed the instructions in the OP properly.

Any idea what's wrong?

Are my missing railroads (not railyards) related, or is that another issue altogether?

Bob

If I read that message correctly, it is saying the texture file: UTLotDry.bmp is missing in the directory: <FSX>\Scenery\World\texture

I suggest browse to that directory and check and see if that file is present

If it is indeed missing then there is something very wrong because not only does UTX install that file with its products, GEX replaces it so a missing file would indicate that somehow the file was either deleted, or, your system is not allowing file writes to take place and the UTX/GEX installers are not working correctly

If you have any kind of Windows security running like UAC, that needs to be shut down and Windows rebooted.... and if it was running then there is a strong possibility both UTX and GEX are not installed into FSX properly

Also, do make sure the 'railyards' are enabled in UTX under the expanded list: Other Terrain Features

Thanks for the quick reply!

I do not have the file UTLotDry.  I do have UTLOT, UTLOT_HW, UTLOT_LM, UtLot2, and UtLot3 (all .bmp's).

What is this UAC thing of which you speak?  I know it's user access control, but I have no idea if it's on or off, or how to find out or to change it  Or what to do afterwards.

I did find out the hard way that GEX has to be run as administrator else it goes through all the motions of backing up etc but doesn't seem to actually do anything nor does it give any sort of error indications.

For the record, I installed UTX a week ago and GEX yesterday.

Edit:  Forgot to state that I'm running Win7 Ultimate 64-bit

What is this UAC thing of which you speak?  I know it's user access control, but I have no idea if it's on or off, or how to find out or to change it  Or what to do afterwards.

I did find out the hard way that GEX has to be run as administrator else it goes through all the motions of backing up etc but doesn't seem to actually do anything nor does it give any sort of error indications.

For the record, I installed UTX a week ago and GEX yesterday.

OK that sounds like the issue..  UAC may not be allowing files to be properly overwritten or configuration files to be edited.

To turn off UAC in Windows 7 do the following:

Go to the START button, in the search box type: UAC then click on "Change User Account Settings. When the GUI appears place the slider to ZERO (all the way to the bottom) then click apply and reboot.

Go back to the UTX config tool and run though the directions again..

Also, just to be safe I think you should then run the GEX interface and elect to disable then re-enable the GEX regions you have installed, then re-enable the UTX options that are available with those regions.

after you shut off UAC you will never deal with that Run as Admin nag again

Okay, I turned UAC off, redid the UTX fix even though I could view it via the "View Selected Custom Texture Set" button.  I'm somewhat concerned that I didn't get a "file already exists" type message when I re-entered the fix.  I then disabled GEX and re-enabled it, ran FTX exited it.  UTX Setup still reports the warnings about UTLotDry.bmp, and UTLotDry.bmp is not in the X\Scenery\World\Texture directory.  I don't seem to have any UTX options in the GEX tool; all it has is a "Delete Backup" button, a Move Backup Folder" button, a "Ground Environment X for North America" radio button and a "GEX for Ultimate Terrain USA or Canada" underneath that along with a greyed-out "GEX for UT Alaska" radio buttons, and similar greyed out radio buttons for the other GEX packages, none of which I have.  At the bottom are large "Enable" and "Disable" buttons, a checkbox for "Autogen Forest Performance Fix", then at the very bottom is a group of four buttons labelled "Support", "Help", "Check for Updates", and "Exit".  No other controls on the page, and no mention anywhere of UTX options.  Likewise there is no mention anyplace of GEX within the UTX setup tool.

GEX for Ultimate Terrain USA or Canada

Ultimate Terrain USA or Canada is UTX (Ultimate Terrain X products)

The interface will auto-detect if you have a UTX product installed. If it is not installed the UT product will be greyed out, like Ultimate Terrain Alaska http://www.scenerysolutions.com/UltAlaskaX.html  is greyed out since you do not have that product installed.

At this point Bob I am at a loss to understand why you are getting this UTX missing files message if you have followed the outline I posted above.

I will ask one of the UTX developers to take a peek at this and see if they can suggest something.

A followup on the missing texture:  all is working fine now, UTLotDry.bmp has magically appeared in the directory, and no warnings any more.  I'm not sure if it happened while messing around with disabling/enabling stuff with UACs off and I overlooked the file's reappearance, or if my machine is possessed by spirits, but I consider both possibilities equally likely.  In any case thank you for your time, I did learn a few things here!

Good!  Glad you got it resolved..   Thumbs Up

I put out a message to the UTX developer/programmer but he has not picked it up as of yet.. I will let him know this was resolved

I am sure it was tied in with the UAC problem somehow.. shutting that down was the best move you could make
