    Posted: August-06-2007 at 11:33am

The patch to upgrade version 1.0 of "Ultimate Terrain X- USA" to version 1.1 is now available from the Scenery Solutions download page:

http://www.scenerysolutions.com/ut_downloads.html

Make sure you read the instructions before running the patch.

All reported issues using the enhancement request tracker have been implemented or at least addressed.    Of the 69 reported requests:

  • 44 enhancements/fixes were implemented
  • 20 requests were either out of scope, not reproducable, or not a problem.
  • 4 requests were put on hold or will be covered in a separate future product.

A new "block housing" landclass texture has been added to the Ultimate Terrain X series.   This texture will be used for downtown areas (like NYC), where tall residential buildings with common walls are present.    In version 1.1, this texture is used for much of the downtown NYC area.

Here are a couple screenshots with and without autogen.

Enjoy !

Hi Allen,

Great!  Thanks for this.
Could you elaborate on what the 4 "on hold" requests were?
Thanks!

Hi Ryan,

The objects that were put on hold were really out of scope for UTX.   Normally, I would tag these as white.    However, I wanted to note these separately, because they are situations that I would like to see addressed eventually outside of UTX.

For example, one of the airports is badly misplaced, resulting in local road conflicts.   We are trying to compile a list of airports that could use repositioning in the future to make them more accurate.  Right now, we just don't have the time or tools to do this efficiently.

The other "on hold" issues are enhancement request that are 3D object related.   We added a few new 3D objects to this patch, but I doubt we will do this in the future unless existing objects need to be repositioned.   We have a new product called Ultimate Objects that should be our big push for 2008.    This product will enhance FSX from a 3D model standpoint, based on some of the data we have been acquiring.    I can't really give too many details right now.    We were hoping that Ultimate Objects would be a product that might be released in the fall of 2007.  But, our plate is going to be full the rest of the year with UTX.

Allen; Many Thanks for UTX. In my (humble) opinion this is by far the one singular best enhancement for FSX and so, after lengthy consultations with my Ministress of Finance (ok - "the wife") I have to announce she has granted me fifty dollars US, to be added to my personal '07 -'08 fiscal budget, and for the express purchase of "More X Objects".

It must be in the nature of a PC pilot's wife to do this ;)  I have the same problem acquiring funds for this hobby...  I suppose they hate the fact that we're on trips when we're inside the house?

Allen,

When trying to run the file, my Virus Detection says it contains a Trojan Horse SHeur.ETP.

Any comments....

I have scanned and run the file on multiple machines, with multiple different virus and malware tools using the latest definition files and they show no issue.

At this point, I would therefore suspect that your virus detection tool (you do not say which one) is generating a false positive.

Hi Allen,

Firstly thanks for a great product and a speedily issued patch.

The only question/request that I have is regarding the default wave effect on the shore lines. This was absent from UTX and hasn't been put back with the patch. Is this something that will be added in the future? I remember there being another request for this feature which is present in the default FSX and you said you would look into it.

I just think you're beautiful sandy beaches will look great with waves crashing onto them.

Many thanks,

Paul.

Paul,

I do remember this now.  But, the patch issues came straight from the new reporting tool mechanism.   Since this was not on the list, it was forgotten.

To get the wave effects added, we would probably need to release a new setup tool.   However, I believe you can do this yourself in the meantime.  You can do this by editing TERRAIN.CFG.

To add the wave effects now, you have to find the UTX sections that define the rocky and or sandy beach coastlines in TERRAIN.CFG.   Then, you simply add one of two lines for wave effects.

Effect=wavecontroller  -> adds the larger ocean waves
Effect=lakewavecontroller -> adds smaller lake waves

To add the effects (I think), just add the lines below in red to the 2 TERRAIN.CFG sections below.    The Texture.440 and Texture.441 labels might possibly be different on your system.    Let me know if this works.....it should.

Mike,

Since you brought it up, I will tell you what happened.  After downloading the update on another computer, I went to install it on my FSX computer ((Vista Home Premium, Pentium Duo Core E6400, 600 Gig HD, 4Gig RAM (yes, I know it only uses about 3.3Gig), nVidia GeForce 7950GTOC)) on which FSX and UTX is installed.  Vista said it could not be installed.  AVG persistantly gave the Trojan message.  I could not "run as administrator either".  I restarted the computer in "Safe Mode" and it loaded and now runs fine and AVG  (latest edition/update) does not bother with it.  That's all I know or need to know to make it run unless that message proves true and then I will format and start again.  Thanks for the work Allen, Jeff, and others have done and everyone's input regarding this installation problem.

Hi Allen,

adding those lines to the terrain.cfg got the waves working. They're a bit intermittant but I guess this is because of the extra complexity in the coastlines. Looks great though.

Thanks for the help,

Paul.

The waves are now intermittant on my sys also.

Anyway, it's good to have a simple fix to bring them back. Smile

Hi John,

You say you downloaded the update on another computer. On that computer (XP?), do you have AVG configured to scan downloaded files on completion of each download, and was anything detected then? If no problems were encountered until you attempted to install the file on Vista then, to me, it rather looks like Vista's protection mechanisms are, in some way, the source of the difficulty. This speculation appears to be borne out by your success while in SAFE mode.

Thanks for the tip on bringing the waves back. They now work as they did before installing UTX.

Would it be possible to post a list of the 44 items implemented?

Paul.  The wave effects in the UT FS9 products are imbedded in the BGL files themselves.   You should already be getting waves, as long as you have ocean coastlines that are being displayed correctly.

What the edit does is bring back the DEFAULT wave action, there is no UT/X specific wave action. Have you checked areas that are not affected by UT/X to see what your wave action is there?

I have the above edit and have normal activity, so I have to ask if it's system specific for you?

Yikes!  Correct indeed sir! Same the world over.

I even tried uninstalling UTX, replacing ALL texture and effect files, and replacing any tweaked files with originals.

Thing is, i had waves before UTX. Any other ideas....?

Thanks

FWIW, UTX would not effect waves outside of it's own coverage area, because the UTX Setup does not alter the default FSX water texture entries in TERRAIN.CFG.  The UTX setup tool only modifies the custom UTX entries in TERRAIN.CFG.

I wonder if SP1 or the Acceleration pack may have taken out your waves ?

Effect=wavecontroller

You should see the wave effects defined for the default water textures in TERRAIN.CFG (those water entries below texture.383). If you don't see these effects defined, then they may have been removed by another process (but not UTX).

Funny you should mention Texture section 383

With Acceleration/SP2 the terrain.cfg stops at texture.382 and then a very large section of autogen is defined, after which the texture lines start again at texture.383

For giggles I just edited the terrain.cfg file and moved all the new autogen entries to the end and made sure the texture lines all ran congruent.

I will test this now and see if that recovers the waves. I also lost them outside the USA

Hi guys,

the important default entry for the shorelines with wave effects is Texture 114; it's the one used throughout the world for ocean shorelines:

// FSX shorelines - generic ocean shoreline

[Texture.114]

Name=Shorelines_Generic_Ocean

Color=FFC0C000

guid={68900A2A-6679-4580-88EA-8BFED4DAC361}

Textures=o_tansand_ls.bmp

Layout=3_PLUS_4

StripWidthMeters=30

Effect=wavecontroller

LandClassRemapType=natural

ExcludeAutogen=Yes

RenderToTexture=Yes

RenderPriority=90000

Water=No

The highlighted line is the one that calls the wave effect. If you have that entry in your terrain.cfg, and wavecontroller.fx in \Effects, and visual effects activated in the display menu then the effects should show outside of the UT-X coverage area.

Keep in mind though that visual effects are very low on the totem pole in terms of display priority. If your system is "stressed" then the effect may be intermittent or not show at all.

Nick, the reason there's a break in the texture entries of your terrain.cfg is that the default .cfg only goes to entry 382, followed by the autogen entries. Anything below the autogen section was added by UT-X or other add-ons. Where those entries are is irrelevant as long as all entries follow the packed sequential format (no gaps or duplicates in the numbering system).

Cheers, Holger

The waves came back after I edited the terrain config numbering so the SP2 autogen additions were after the UTX entries. Why, I do not know however I just reinstalled FSX recently to test something and in doing so I installed UTX after SP2/Accell where the first time when I had no wave loss issue outside the USA I had installed UTX -before- SP2/Accel. In both cases I ran the UTX/SP2 patch.

The only difference between install A (waves worked) and install B (waves lost) was when UTX was installed, meaning the numbers in the terrain.cfg for UTX were not split by the SP2 additions as they were in install B

No performance issues here. I test hardware for some of the majors and run refrigerant cooled 4gig+ CPU, DDR3 2000 (and higher) memory with video card core/memory/shader clock speeds that would make a Nvidia Ultra blush  LOL

NickN,

In reference to the surf wave problem, you mentioned in your earlier post that you simply...

     "moved all the new autogen entries to the end and made sure the texture lines all ran congruent."

...and would test it to see if it worked. Did it work?

In this most recent post, you said you renumbered the various entrys to put them in order. Please give more detail, since the numbering format of the texture entries and the autogen entries seem to be very different.

I tried moving the autogen to the end and that didn't seem to help. I'm guessing that means I need to do the renumbering thing, but I'm not sure how to do that, because of the concerns I have about the seemingly different numbering format between the texture and autogen entries.

(I do have the "Effect=wavecontroller" in the 2 proper places and also the various files in their proper locations. Actually I put "Effect=wavecontroller" under "Name=UT_OCEAN_SAND" and "Effect=lakewavecontroller" under "Name=UT_OCEAN_ROCK". And I've tried viewing the waves at various water and effects settings while running FSX. Still no surf waves.)

Thanks.

Yes it worked to restore waves OUTSDE the USA/Canada. What gets the waves to work (somewhat) in USA and Canade and is to edit the wave controller back into the file as noted above but that will not restore wave to working like they do outside of UTX coverage. The waves have never worked right in UTX in the coverage area no matter what I have tried. Seeing them is a matter of luck

There was no renumbering involved. All I did was scroll down the terrain.cfg file and find the new SP2 entries which start out like this:

//------------------------------------------------------------------------
// autogen format
// [Autogen.id.type.variant]
//  id = id of the object specified in the "autogen" tag for the vector data
//  type = an extra identifier that allows mulitple autogenned types to be
//         associated with a single tag.  For example an autogen with id=0
//         could use type=0 for medians ...................

All those entries are listed as AUTOGEN

[Autogen.13.0.0]  etc, etc, etc

So I simply cut/paste the entire autogen section to the end of the [texture.XXX] terrain list and then moved the list up so [texture.382] and [texture.383] ran back to back again till the end of the numerical order where the autogen section began

Thanks for your comments, Nick. I misunderstood and thought it was a fix for the U.S. coverage area. I did move the autogen entries down but didn't check the rest of the world for the results, only the U.S.  Well, at least it will be good to have waves everywhere else.
