Hi all,

Hope you are still reading this after yet another "new build" post! My current FSX rig is over 11 years old and I want to do a complete new build. Requirements are ability to run Win7, O/C (if necessary), and will be using a single widescreen monitor.

I used Nick's bible for my previous build and will do the same (as much as I can) for this one. The last post of his regarding a new build deals with a Haswell on air. I know I don't want or need the latest and greatest from intel as I want to run Win7. So what are your suggestions regarding CPU and cooling? Air or Water? Memory...speed and timings? BTW, this build will be used for FSX only.

I'm sure based on your responses (hopefully) I will have other questions but need to start with the basics and go from there.

Thanks!

Bill

6700K
DDR4 3600MHz CL15
GTX1080

I would choose air cooling for my next build for zero chance of leaks and the high-end air coolers from for instance Noctua are almost as efficient as all-in-one water coolers.

Skylake requires USB 3.0 drivers to be preloaded in order to use USB keyboard/mouse during Windows 7 installation.

This section is a guide on preloading USB 3.0 drivers and installing Windows 7 (Asus boards)

Depending on your budget, a GTX1070 will do the job for you, coupled with the above components, on a good quality motherboard.
