    Posted: June-23-2013 at 1:48pm

This is how I personally install/setup UTX. It can make a big difference in both performance and overall visual quality. The following is for all versions of FSX: Box, STEAM and P3D

You must understand that roads cancel out autogen buildings so by resizing and removing items that have to do with roads the visual impact can increase quite a bit by allowing more autogen to appear. Rendered road lights (not texture map lights, 3D rendered lights) are a performance hog as well as bridge objects. These items can make or break a system in the right circumstances and I have addressed all these items in this document.

Everything here is OPTIONAL however I suggest you follow this guide and do as I suggest FIRST, then ENABLE or change things as you see fit and as you can SEE what kind of performance impact or visual impact a change makes.

THIS IS EASY TO DO.. the instructions are simply very comprehensive to make sure no mistakes are made.

First and foremost if you run Windows with UAC enabled you MUST right click any/all installers and select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR. If you have shut down UAC in Windows (as you should) that step is not necessary.

Be very aware that aggressive virus scanners can improperly detect the downloads and the EXE's as virus and damage them. Its best to DISABLE any virus scanner before downloading the products or patches and running them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: There is a complete list of the products links and links to their patches below these directions

INSTALLATION OF UTX PRODUCTS

1. Install UTX products in the following order.. if you don't have one of these simply skip it and go to the next in the list but install the UTX products you currently own in the order they appear here:

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR USER WHO HAVE UTX CANADA/ALASKA/TROPICS: BASED ON THE RELEASE DATES OF UTX USA v2.0-2.1/EUROPE V2.0 IF YOU INTEND TO INSTALL UTX USA v2.0-2.1/EUROPE V2.0 I SUGGEST INSTALLING UTX CANADA/ALASKA/TROPICS FIRST, THEN INSTALL UTX EUROPE V2.1 AND USA 2.1 LAST.

THIS WAY YOUR UTX INSTALL WILL GO IN BASED ON THE ORDER OF PRODUCT RELEASE AND ANY CROSS FILES WILL GET UPDATED IN THE PROCESS.

USA v1x (skip this version if you intend to install UTX USA v2.1+)
Canada 1x (skip this version if you intend to install UTX Canada v2x+)
Europe v1.x (skip this version if you intend to install UTX Europe v2.1+)
Alaska
Tropical
UTX Europe v2.1+
UTX USA V2.1+
UTX Canada V2x+

2. Starting with the first region in the list, download and install the latest full installer. BE SURE after that initial install is finished to:

a. Open the UTX config tool that came with the product and upon successful start, close it.

b. Start FSX to allow the scenery database to rebuild then close FSX

3. Install The UTX patches. NEWER VERSIONS OF UTX MAY NOT HAVE ANY PATCHES
Each patch comes with instructions and a download link to the patch. The instructions are basically all the same;

Download unzip, run the FSXPATCH.exe patch preparation application, click the PATCH PREPARE button and then execute the patch. BE SURE after ANY patch is installed to:

a. Open the UTX config tool that came with the product and upon successful start, close it.

b. Start FSX to allow the scenery database to rebuild then close FSX

c. Go to the NEXT PATCH and repeat #3, 3a and 3b above until all patches are installed.

4. IF YOU USE ACCELERATION DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THESE PATCHES AFTER ANY VERSION OF UTX USA/CANADA/EUROPE ARE INSTALLED OR UPGRADED. YOU MUST REAPPLY THESE PATCHES IF YOU UPGRADE UTX FROM v1x to v2x

FSX STEAM EDITION: YOU MUST MANUALLY BROWSE THE PATCHES FOR FSX STEAM TO THE MAIN FSX STEAM INSTALL DIRECTORY. THESE PATCHES SHOULD BE APPLIED TO STEAM AFTER INSTALLING UTX PRODUCTS INTO A FSX STEAM EDITION SYSTEM

Once you have ALL the UTX products installed and patched to the latest versions, then download and install these 2 FSX Acceleration patches from here:

http://files.100megabyte.com/Ultterrain/Patch/UtxUsaAccel.exe  UTX USA or Canada

http://files.100megabyte.com/Ultterrain/UtxEurAccel.exe UTX Europe

NOTE: Those 2 patches must be reinstalled if you add another UTX product OR update any UTX product later with a patch later

5. BEFORE making any UTX configuration tool changes, perform the following task:

NOTE: THIS IS A CRITICAL STEP THAT MUST BE REPEATED IF YOU PATCH OR UPGRADE ANY UTX VERSION ON FIRST RUN OF THE UTX INTERFACE.

Open EACH UTX configuration tool (one by one, not all at once). Once the tool opens and goes through its checks, click OK/OK and completely enter the tool.

On the keyboard hit: CTRL-SHIFT-R  a box will appear asking you if you wish to perform a duplicate file check, select YES and allow the operation to run. Once complete close the box and the UTX Tool.

Go to the next UTX Configuration tool and REPEAT the above steps until all UTX tools have been run and verified/repaired.

UTX installation is now complete

6. Set up UTX as outlined after the download list that is presented below

REMEMBER: BE SURE TO PERFORM STEP 5 ABOVE AFTER ALL YOUR UTX PRODUCTS ARE INSTALLED/PATCHED AND ALSO REMEMBER TO PERFORM THAT STEP IF YOU UPGRADE UTX TO A LATER RELEASE VERSION.

=======================================

When you are finished Installing and setting up UTX, apply these fixes:

UTX USA with GEX North America ONLY: Please read this post and follow the directions; http://www.simforums.com/Forums/utx-usa-users-rail-yards_topic33531.html

================================================

THIS NEXT SECTION IS ONLY FOR UTX EUROPE v1.x. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO UTX EUROPE v2.x

The following fixes for UTX were introduced after the UTX patches were released. After installing/patching and setting up UTX as outlined, perform the following tasks if you use these UTX products:

UTX EUROPE

2. Unzip and drop the 2 single files into <FSX>/Scenery/UtEurWater/scenery folder (overwriting the existing files)

==================================================

UTX TROPICAL AMERICA and CARIBBEAN (if you do not have this product, skip this)

2. Unzip and drop the single file into the <FSX>\Scenery\UTLcVeg\scenery folder (overwriting the existing files)

3. Browse to: <FSX>\Scenery\UtTacExcl\scenery  and locate the following file: HPU2626T.BGL    Then DELETE IT

====================================================

SETTING UP UTX For Performance and visuals...

NOTE THAT: There are some settings that once you change them in one UTX tool, they change for all tools at the same time. I will list the settings in the order they need to be changed.

Open the UTX USA Configuration Tool -

NOTE: The changes you are about to make under the TERRAIN and ADVANCED MENU will change ALL version of UTX at the SAME TIME using the single UTX USA tool. One word of caution: IF you install another version of UTX after these changes are made, or reinstall any version of UTX, then the changes under the TERRAIN and ADVANCED menu will be RESET to the UTX defaults and you must make them again. Installing UTX patches will NOT reset these values, only a reinstall or addition will force this reset to happen.

Top Menu: TERRAIN Change Road Surface colors

(the items in this list are optional however this is how I set my personal system road colors)
Uncheck ALL the add auto imprint options  OPTIONAL - IF you do not intend to use any moving traffic (which is best for performance) you can opt to enable the auto imprint feature for the roads. If you intend to use any moving traffic I suggest these be left unchecked. Cars look silly running over static cars so moving traffic does not work well with the imprints enabled

ROAD COLORS:
Make ALL the Roads CONCRETE except:

1 Lane Divided Roads
Highway Access Ramps

Make those 2 ASPHALT

Roads blend with the scenery and GEX far better with the lighter UTX concrete tone for most of the roads.

Night Light Imprint (urban roads) ALL ENABLED is a better choice as it will give a better visual lighting impact with or without the UTX lights. This is of course optional however with GEX we updated these tiles to work with OR without the newer UTX night lighting. Suggest ENABLE them all (or) optionally some may wish to reduce the amount of road map lighting but keep major important roads, in this case experiment with disabling the 1 lane minor/divided and perhaps 2 lane roads to see what you may prefer. These change can be made with FSX running and then simply re-enter the sim, enter the scenery library from the FSX menu and click OK and let the scenery database rebuild. You can make changes and check on the fly this way.

Click OK

UTX USA/Europe version 1x ONLY:
Top Menu TERRAIN - Open: Change Lighting Effect Brightness.
Set to 25% or 50%, your preference..

With UTX USA v2.0-2.1/Europe v2.0 light scale and brightness is adjusted through the UTX Light Tool

Click OK

Click - CHANGE WAVE EFFECTS
There are 11 selections to go through. Start at the top and set the bullet in the selection I outline below:

MODIFY ULTIMATE TERRAIN FEATURE WIDTHS bullet in COASTLINES. Change UT OCEAN PIER line width to 5   Click SAVE and then DONE

SIDE MENU FEATURE TREE LIST:

NOTE: These features are specific to EACH version of UTX. They will not reset if you install another UTX version however you will be making changes to EACH UTX version as noted below

==============================================================

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING IS ONLY IF YOU DO NOT USE UTX USA v2.1 and UTX EUROPE v2.0 (Or any UTX product that does not incorporate their NEW NIGHT LIGHTING features) UTX night Lighting has changed as well as the performance hit (far lower) with their latest product releases. SKIP THIS SECTION if you use the new UTX products with their configurable night lighting tool!!

UTX USA/CANADA/EUROPE/TROP  v1.x  this is NOT for any version of UTX (2.0+) that uses the new UTX autogen 3d lights

In the FEATURE TREE dropdown menus of the interface on the side.. Expand NIGHT LIGHTING

DISABLE Major Road Night Lighting.
OPTIONAL: Leave Intersection lighting ENABLED.  But remember ANY night lights will DROP performance so disable this too if you have performance issues and are trying to find the problem.

For highest performance disable both however the intersection lighting works well with GEX so if you have the hardware ability it is up to you which to leave enabled/disabled.

==================================================================

UTX 2.0+ AND THE NEW LIGHT SYSTEM

This is how I personally run the new UTX lighting system. Of course this is all personal preference however I find this best overall for my system:

FSX/P3D must be CLOSED to make these selections:

1. Open the tool and click the button: SET LIGHT ASSIGNMENTS   this writes the lights to the terrain.cfg. UTX may in the future set this automatically but for now you must click that button or the lights will not appear.

2. Click: Select Alternate Object Library - select: 3D or 4D ( I use 4D) Lights with Ground Spot (2/3 Height)  click INSTALL    this is a far more realistic height to the lights

3. Click: Select Alternate Textures- select: Standard Lights Brighter Ground Spot  - click INSTALL

4. Click the button at the bottom: Configure Light Slots  in the top box you will see 4 light slot options..

highlight Light Slot 1

Light Size: LARGER

Change the slider values (if they are different) to (from top to bottom)
100
0.0
80
.90
click SET

highlight Light Slot 2 and REPEAT the above

highlight Light Slot 3

Light Size: LARGER

Change the slider values (if they are different) to (from top to bottom)
150
0.0
40
.70
click SET

highlight Light Slot4 and REPEAT the setting for Light slot 3 above

Close the Light tool

----------------------------------------------------------------

In the ROAD SURFACES dropdown, DISABLE the following (some may already be disabled):

RD4 Minor Urban Roads (Residential) Gets rid of autogen being removed from tiles, this is always disabled
Downtown Major Roads  (UTX USA v2.0-2.1+ only)
RTX MOVING TRAFFIC for freeways, highways (This is RT1 and RT2 Freeway/Highway and major road traffic in UTX USA v2.0-2.1)

Cars are a major performance hog. I would suggest they be disabled here to offload the footprint from the sim. Setting the FSX car slider to ZERO does NOT remove the UTX moving traffic footprint from the sim! You must disable the traffic in the tool then set the FSX 'cars' scenery slider to ZERO

Close the UTX USA setup tool.

Open the UTX Canada tool: REPEAT the same settings made for UTX USA above for SIDE MENU FEATURE TREE LIST. Set lighting based on UTX Canada 1x above
Once complete, close the UTX Canada tool.

IF you have UTX Tropical Caribbean installed, open that tool and REPEAT the same settings made for UTX USA above for SIDE MENU FEATURE TREE LIST

Open the UTX Europe Tool, REPEAT the same settings made for USA above EXCEPT under the ROAD SURFACE dropdown, DISABLE the following. (some may already be disabled)
BR4 and BR5 Bridge objects for minor Urban and Rural roads
RD4 Minor urban roads
RD5 Minor rural roads

Close the UTX Europe tool.

UT ALASKA: This is optional but will provide a performance boost: Open the UT Alaska Tool. Click the button Improve Performance Using Saved Environmental Presets On the next window, click the button Load Existing Preset Environment and select the option: AlaskaModels1Alt  then click the LOAD button.

Close the UT Alaska Tool.

UTX is now setup. Launch FSX and let the database rebuild.

UTX Europe road remove major autogen amounts from cities and towns...

There is a reason why Anthony and I suggest that for Europe (only) and not other UTX regions roads be either eliminated OR reduced. Click here and you will see why:

http://www.simforums.com/forums/why-turn-off-rrs-and-roads-utx-europe_topic38085_post223942.html#223942

Synopsis of that linked post:
When you limit or remove the roads you get BUILDINGS back and in Europe that means a lot of buildings you may be missing due to roads as shown in the images I posted of Paris, France. It is how they are designed in Europe. UTX roads (and FSX roads but UTX multiplies this problem) cancel out a lot of autogen in Europe cities due to the fact that the textures run in a square grid and the roads are based on Roman era layout and design.

In the USA the road system is not 'roman' based, its far more square sector based which is why it isn't as bad or noticeable, but roads in the USA cancel out autogen too!  Remember, ROADS remove scenery so limiting them or removing them can have a massive impact.

To completely eliminate Europe roads quickly without changing UTX options:  Go to the Scenery Library. Scroll down and locate the line: UT EUROPE ROADS and UNCHECK this feature. Click OK and let the database rebuild.

ANOTHER OPTION: In Europe you can opt to leave the roads enabled in the FSX scenery library and instead DISABLE the following in the UTX Europe config tool: ROAD SURFACES

RCX Road Encasements
Urban Major and Secondary Roads
Urban connecting and important Roads
Minor Rural Roads

Leave "All Freeway Highway, Interstates, Motorways"   ENABLED

BR1- BR2 - BR3 Bridge Objects (you can experiment with disabling/enabling these as they CAN be performance killers in larger cities. Leave then enabled first and if you have no issues with performance leave them enabled.

This will leave the primary roadways enabled but eliminate the major autogen loss the Europe roads can cause in cities and around them. It is a good trade-off from eliminating roads all together. Of course both suggestions above are optional but DO KEEP THIS IN MIND with Europe..   the BRIDGE objects in Europe that are removed when roads are DISABLED in the scenery library and that will increase performance by quite a bit in cities such as Amsterdam. Bridges in the larger cities in Europe can create quite a performance drop with slower computers.

NOTE LAST:

THIS IS FOR ALL VERSIONS OF UTX.

IF YOU USE 3rd PARTY LANDCLASS WITH UTX

The urban/vegetation layer sandwich for landclass is universal to all UTX releases

After installing your secondary landclass files such as SceneryTech or Xclass, enter the scenery library through the FSX control panel, locate the landclass files you use and place them in the library list between the following UTX items:

UT LANDCLASS - Urban
LANDCLASS  X <-------------- Place all landclass products between the UTX Urban and Vegetation layers and enable as needed (only ONE)
LANDCLASS  Y <------------------|
LANDCLASS  Z <------------------|
UT LANDCLASS - Vegetation

Click OK and let the database build.

Also, always make sure the UTX scenery list item: UT Exclusions For Default Scenery   is listed BELOW the UT LANDCLASS - Vegetation layer in the scenery library which should be at the very bottom just before the FSX default scenery entries
