I was recently reading in a forum where some one mentioned the FSX scenery.cfg file in the profile.  I can locate the scenery.cfg file ok but I can't identify the profile. I am trying to correct a notice : SCENERY.CFGfile error, Local Scenery directory (Addon Scenery\Scenery) in scenery Area .115 not found.  Thanks

Your scenery.cfg will be at:
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX

Make a backup copy of your scenery.cfg just in case you need it.

Open it with Notepad.  Find the entry for [Area.115] and note the title.  Open FSX and on the main window go to settings and then scenery library, find the problem area, highlight it and then hit the delete button!

Hi idahosurge, I am having more problems than a man on a wrong train.  First I did your fix exactly the way you suggested. However it didn't work for me.  Area 115 was Reno.  I went to the Scenery Library highlighted Reno and hit the delete button, however that did not fix the Area 115 warning.  I went back to scenery Library and actually deleted the Reno entry.  Still didn't fix it. Strangely enough Reno is not listed in the Scenery Library now however I can still get the Reno airports in Select Airports.
Let me give you the scenario of what caused the problem:
I wanted to install the KLBI Bellingham WA airport addon.  I was running it before I upgraded my OS to Windows 7 and clean installed to new hard drives. I made a  FX Addon Scenery file in my data drive and installed KBLI there. When I went to the Scenery Library and went to the file location. It would not install.  I then transferred the file to FSX addon scenery. It installed but only buildings and pavement would show when opened no planes or vehicles. Figuring the file was corrupted I uninstalled KBLI.  I then deleted the KBLI file from the FSX Addon Scenery. It was immediately after that that I started getting the Scenery.Cfg file error Area .115. I re-downloaded the KBLI addon and it was then that I noticed that file was a "Read Only".  I removed the Read Only however it still wont install at all. And I still get the Area .115 warning. Thanks for your help.

What IdahoS said should have fixed the issue.  This tool may help:
The FS9 and FSX Scenery.cfg files can both be quickly restored to proper structure and function by using Steve Greenwood's excellent free FSTscenery utility:

http://www.home.eart...s/fsscenery.zip (from http://forum.simflight.com/topic/52341-the-fsx-scenerycfg-file/ and read this http://forums.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?198596-FSX-Scenery-Config.
The last option rename the scenery.cfg file to someting like scenery.cfg.ori or similar and allow FSX to rebuild a new cfg file on the proviso you will have to manually re-add all of your scenery layers via the scenery library in FSX.  FYI: In the scenery library file you do NOT have to delete a layer - just untick it and its no longer there as far as FSX is concerned.
I use a lovely little payware program called 'Addit Pro' and this also fixes these types of errors.Smile

Something is not right.  Reno is a default scenery area so you should not have deleted it.  I should have warned you, but I did not even think that you would be having a problem with a default scenery area.  In a normal FSX install the Addon Scenery folder would be 115 and Reno would be 116.

For starters I hope that you made a backup of your scenery.cfg like I suggested, if you did put that back into C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX.

You say that you deleted KBLI from the Addon Scenery folder, did you delete the scenery folder?

Under Addon Scenery you should have a scenery folder and a texture folder

Addon Scenery\Scenery
Addon Scenery\Texture

If either of those are missing you will get an error message.

When you deleted KBLI did you delete the scenery and/or texture folder?  If you did make a new one and put them back in.  They do not have to have anything in them, but they have to be there.

idahosurge, I appreciate your patience with me. I did backup my scenery.cfg file and I did restore it however the area 115 warning still showed.  I checked and I did, in fact delete the Addon Scenery\Scenery and the Add on Scenery\Texture.  I re stored them by typing them back in under the folder. However that did not change anything. I have run FSTscenery several times however it did not resolve the problem.
In FSX Scenery.cfg Area.120 is Addon Scenery -  and Area .116 is Istanbul.

As it turns out that I can still load Reno from the Scenery Library, I can get by OK with that and I guess that I can tolerate deleting the Area .115 warning each time I open FSX.

What started this whole thing was (I think) is trying to install KBLI and the deleting it.  Also I might note that when I download BKLI (and other files) they some times open as “Read Only”. I understand that that it a problem with Windows 7. Again I appreciate all of your patience and the help.

So area 115 is Reno, have you looked at the Reno folder to see if there are scenery and texture folders in the Reno folder?  Something is causing the error message.  Since it seems that this website will not let you attach a file, copy and paste your scenery.cfg to this thread and let me look at it.

I can load all of the Reno Scenery out of the active FSX Airport File.  Several Airports -  all there.  I went back and looked at my old saved FSX file in Carbonite and the Scenery file is just like this one. (No I didn't re-install it. Every thing this time was a clean install right off of the DVD.  I hope that I am sending this file like you intended. I appreciate your help.

Is this FSX or FS9?  I am not at home so I can not look at my scenery.cfg file, but on top your's says FS9, this maybe normal for FSX and I just have never noticed it.

One thing I do notice is that in every FSX scenery.cfg I have looked at Properller Objects is followed by Addon Scenery and all of the city scenery areas are before Properller Objects.

Have you looked in the Reno folder to see if that folder has a scenery folder and a texture folder?

Yes, it is normal to have that FS9 [General] entry in the FSX Scenery.cfg.

I compared your scenery.cfg to mine and the only thing different is that my "Addon Scenery" folder is after "Propeller Objects".  The only thing that I can think of for you to try is in the Scenery Library move "Addon Scenery" so it is above "Propeller Objects" and below "Reno".

Make sure that in the Reno folder you have a scenery folder and a texture folder.

Edit: Is there a chance that you deleted any files out of your Reno/Scenery or Reno/Texture folders?

Idahosurge, I know that you must be getting tired of this and I must say that you have been patient.  I would like to make this my exit message hoping that you will help me to educate my self. In my F:\Flight SimulatorX> Scenery I have this partial example:

Name                                     Date Modified                  Type

0002                                      10/25/2010 4:59 PM        File folder

Question, is this the file that the Scenery Library in Flight Sim goes to in order to install the requested airport?  If not, what is its purpose?  How do I match an entry in this file with the name of the airport?

Then we go to the Scenery.cfg with notepad.  Does FSX go to this file to load airports and scenery?

I tried to follow your suggestion as to moving Addon Scenery above Propeller Objects and Below Reno. However I didn’t know if I should change the Area  Numbers since they  were “juxtapositioned”.

Yes, as I said before I did delete Reno out of the Scenery Library, however the Reno airports still load OK so the file must be somewhere.

I wish that I knew more about these things and it makes me wonder how others can be so knowledgeable.  Is there a tutorial somewhere that gives this information?

I would appreciate it if you or someone will answer some of my questions, and I thank you for the help.

The separate Reno scenery layer is related to additional scenery objects as part of the Acceleration add-on for the area. It has nothing to do with the default FSX Reno-Tahoe airport which would be there with/without this layer. You should not have deleted it.

Unless you have expert knowledge of the inner workings of the FSX Scenery.cfg, you should keep away from making any changes to that file using something like Notepad. Only ever make changes by using the FSX Scenery Library itself.

As for your question on the scenery folder with numbers: FSX divides its world up into different sized 'cells'. These folders you mention contain all the generic default scenery (water, coastlines, roads, railroads, airports, land elevations, etc.) for very large areas of the world. Within these cells you will not find individual scenery files for individual airports as many are amalgamated into one scenery file which gets loaded by FSX for all airports in that cell or sub-cell.

Reading back through this thread yours sounds like a recurring problem which others have seen. At some point you loaded a scenery add-on for a particular area which placed its files in the default FSX "Addon Scenery" folder. At a later point you then went and uninstalled it, but unfortunately the uninstaller was poorly written and instead of just removing the files it added it likely also removed the required "Scenery" and "Texture" sub-folders (and maybe even the "Addon Scenery" folder itself). When you next started FSX it complained because those folders were no longer there. All you really had to do at that point was re-create these missing folders and all would have been well.

Unfortunately it looks like other actions taken have possibly compounded your problem.

Another thing to note the Scenery.cfg file in the main FSX folder is not the one used by FSX to determine what scenery is/is not loaded and active. If you have been making changes to it via Notepad, or some other tool, or by copying and pasting backup files, and not via the FSX Scenery Library, you will not have been impacting what FSX does/does not use when you run it. The Scenery.cfg file which is used will be found somewhere like C:\Program Data\Microsoft\FSX (note that the ProgramData folder is normally hidden).

Thanks Idahosurge and Quantumleap, for the good help.  It is a shame that a guy like me has to learn the hard way. Its also a shame that there is no tutorial (at least not to my knowledge) that would allow someone like me to learn what not to do as well as what to do.  So far the only real problem that I have and am aware of is that I have the pesky Area 115 warning to delete each time i open FSX.

Have you opened FSX, on the left of the splash screen clicked "settings", then on the right clicked "sceneery library", then using the move up and move down keys adjust the entries so yours looks like this

Note that the numbers in the screen shot compared to the numbers of the scenery.cfg as seen in notepad do not agree, this is normal.

Do not make any changes to the scenery.cfg in notepad, all changes need to be made through the Scenery Library while in FSX.

Like Jeff said, the Reno folder in the Scenery Library has nothing to do with Reno's airports.  You said that you deleted the Reno folder.  If you deleted it and never made a new one and added it back then that is why you get the error message.  The scenery.cfg tells FSX to look for one, but one is not there, you deleted it.  If you did delete it make a new one:

Microsoft Flight Simulator X/Scenery/Cities/Reno/scenery & texture

The files in the Reno folder total 358MB and one file is 355MB so they are to big to email you.  If you indeed deleted the whole folder see if it is still in your Recycle Bin, if not insert your FSX Accel CD and try a repair or better yet if you do not have a bunch of addon's just unintall FSX Accel, then uninstall FSX and load it all from scratch.

BTW, I do not mind helping you because I am curious why you get the error message.  I have messed my sceney library up in the past and got these kinds of error messages, but it was a lot easier to fix than your problem.

My Scenery Library settings were identical to yours except for the Reno that I had deleted. As I said in Freeflight>Select Airport I can still load Reno/Tahoe Int and what appears to be all of the local airports. When I go to Flight Sim X/Scenery/Cities/Reno/ properties show that I have 347 MB in the Scenery file however there is only 189 KB in the Texture file.  Is that a clue?  I need to say that I backed up my FSX stuff in Carbonite before I did the upgrade.  What happened was, I did not realize that you have to manage Carbonite pretty closely, and without me being aware, through my ignorance, it copied over my backup scenery files before I realized that what had happened.  Carbonite is kind of funny.  There were a lot of files that didn't even backup originally.  I have since gone to O&O Disk Image which is not so trecherous. So, that is why I didn't have a backup.

I would appreciate an opinion as to why there is only 189 KB in the Texture file.

You mentioned uninstalling and reinstalling from scratch.  I am forced to tell you the reason why I really don't want to do that. First I have to tell you that I am 80 years old. I have been fooling withh computers for about eight years and everything that I have learned is because there are some pretty good tutorials out there for most things, but not many for this part of Flight simulators.  I can build em and overclock em but I don't know much about what I am doing here, so I get into trouble.
I am deaf except that I have bi-lateral cochlear Implants. My situation is that I have a very poor relationship with the phone. This is not a "Poor Me" I just have to tell you this so you will understand the following.
When I upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit I installed a 1TB HDD for data and a 150GB VRap for my Flight Sim.  I installed FSX fine however when I installed FS Acel it got the idea that I was making an install on a new rig, so it would not give me an opportunity to enter the Product code. I uninstalled FSX and FS Acel three times and each time did a clean install. No change.  I got my wife who has perfect hearing, to act as a go-between and tried to install by phone.  What we got was a very impatient woman with a heavy accent and finally realized all she could do was assist with FSX. When my wife finally got through to her that we were having trouble with FS Acel she said: "Well what are you calling me for". She then  handed us off to a number that would not answer - so I gave up.  At this point I want to say that it is impossible to find a number to get to Microsoft help.  You may think that there is but whatever you find won't get you the help that you want.  Anyway I searched and found the email address of the individual who was in charge of the Microsoft Impaired Program.  I sent her a message telling her my problem with hearing.  She was very nice and handed me off to another individual who connected me via email to a level 2 Technician. This guy (his name was Raj.) was really nice and made arrangements to talk to us by phone.  On the phone with my wife he connected to my PC by some program that MS had and while talking to my wife he led her through a fairly extensive process that ended up with him installing a new product code.  It took about 30 minutes. FS Acel has performed perfectly since then as has FSX.  I am saying all of that to say that I did not get the product key becasue he read it off to my wife and she typed it in. (There may be some place that I can find it but I am not aware of where) So - bottom line: It would not be much of a problem to do another reinstall, I haven't added my addon scnery yet and just a couple of aircraft. However I sure don't want to have to go through the Product Code process again. Do you think that I could by with doing a FS Acel repair without getting into any more trouble? And what is your opinion for the 189KB.  Sorry to take up so much space and your time but I felt that I had to let you know my situation.

Nothing wrong with the Reno scenery folder containing 347 Mb and the texture folder 189 kb, that's what I have on my system as well. This is good news in that it means you have not deleted the scenery files for Reno enhancement provided by Acceleration.

As for needing to re-install, I do not think this will be needed as you still have the necessary folders/files for the Acceleration Reno. Do you still have an entry in the FSX Scenery Library which says Reno?

Like Jeff said, the amount of MB's in your Reno Scenery and Texture folders are fine.  Looking at the MB's under the properties tab vs. looking at the actual MB's of the file will give you two different amounts.

So you say that you have deleted Reno, so it is not in your scenery library, correct?

If Reno is not in your scenery library at this time then Reno should not be causeing any error message!

What error message are you still getting and looking at the scenery.cfg with notepad what is the name of the area causing the error message?

Here is a recap of my situation:

Reno was mistakenly deleted from the Settings – Scenery Library.

Reno is still in F:\Flight simulation X\Cities\Reno.

I was getting the notice: Scenery.CFG File error before I deleted Reno from the Settings Scenery Library.

Here is what started the whole difficulty:

I wanted to install the KLBI (Bellingham WA) airport addon.  I was running it fine before I upgraded my OS to Windows 7 and clean installed to new hard drives. I made a  FX Addon Scenery file in my data drive and installed KBLI there. When I went to the Scenery Library and went to the file location. It would not install.  I then transferred the file to FSX Addon Scenery. It installed but when I opened it in FSX however only buildings and pavement would show. It did not show any aircraft or vehicles. I decided that the file was corrupted. I uninstalled KBLI.  I then deleted the KBLI file from the FSX Addon Scenery. It was immediately after that that I started getting the Scenery.Cfg file error Area .115.

Now here is my latest question: If Reno is still in Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Cities\Reno.  And if I open FSX >Settings.Scenery Library I get a window that says (I have a JPEG image but I don’t know how to insert it here so I will try to create enough so that I know you will see what I have)

First, if you are sure that you do not have an entry for Reno when you look in the FSX Scenery Library this is what you need to do to get it added back in.

1) Start FSX, go to Settings and then press the Scenery Library button on the right hand side.
2) Press the Add Area button.
3) When the Select Scenery Directory dialog appears you should be at the main FSX folder. Scroll down the list and double-click on Scenery.
4) Scroll down the next list and double-click on Cities.
5) Scroll down the next list and click once on Reno. The Directory entry should now read F:\Flight Simulator X\Scenery\Reno and the Scenery area title should say Reno. The radio button at the bottom should be Use this scenery directly.
6) Press the OK button.
7) When the dialog switches to saying "Look in Reno", and lists Scenery and Texture folders all you have to do is click in the white space directly underneath these two entries (do not click on the entries themselves) and Reno will be added back into your FSX Scenery Library at the top of the list.
8) Click on the OK button to finish.

That should have rectified the Reno entry you previously deleted.

To go any further we do not need to know anymore about how you got to where you are, we need to know exactly what is still wrong after this.

- Exactly what error message related to missing scenery do you still get, if any, when you try to start FSX?
- If you are still getting an error message, please copy and paste in your reply a copy of the contents of the file C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\Scenery.cfg (IMPORTANT NOTE - we do not want the contents of the scenery.cfg from F:\Flight Simulator X). As C:\ProgramData may be a hidden folder on your system, you may have to make it visible. To do that go to Control Panel. Select Appearance and Personalization and then select "Show hidden files and folders" from the Folder Options section. When the Folder Options dialog appears, on the View tab, make sure that you have the radio button selected for the entry which says "Show hidden files, folders and drives". Once that's done press the Apply button.

Once we have the requested information we can make additional requests/suggestions to get this resolved.

Jeff

Hey Jeff, I went through the steps and it restored Reno to the Scenery directory.  I got this far before on my own but I didn’t know to click on the white space directly underneath.

However upon opening FSX I still get the original error message. I will give a word copy of the notice here again:

SCENERY.CFG file error. Local Scenery directory

(Addon Scenery\SCENERY) in scenery Area.115 not

Found. Click OK to continue.

Once clicked FSX goes on to run fine. Now note this.  When I ran FSTscenery immediately after the fix, I got this message:

 FSTscenery

New Scenery.cfg created, scenery entries included.

Non-critical issues were encountered during processing.

Please check “_issues.txt” for details.

I have no idea where to find  _issues.txt

Here is the scenery.cfg from C;\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSX\Scenery.cfg:

Jeff, I noted that there are no spaces between Area.115 and All the way through Area 121 in the original .cfg file. This must be important.

White space is not important so this is not the issue.

1) Do you have a folder (not file) named "Addon Scenery" in "F:\Flight Simulator X"?
2) If yes to 1, do you have a folder (not file) named "Scenery" in "F:\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery"?
3) If yes to 1, do you have a folder (not file) named "Texture" in "F:\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery"?

If the answer to either/or 2 and 3 is no (i.e. these folders are missing) then go to "F:\Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery" in the Windows explorer, right-click, select New->Folder and then name it appropriately.

Jeff

Have you noticed that you have no "area 116" in the scenery.cfg file that you posted?

Have you noticed that for Reno it calls it "area 121", but the layer is "116"?

Check for the folders in Addon Scenery as instructed by Jeff.

After that rerun FSTScenery and then go look at your scenery.cfg file and see it renumbered everything.  Istanbul should be "area 116 / layer 116" and Reno should now be "area 120 / layer 120" and everything in between should be numbered accordingly.

If it did not renumber everything correctly then renumber them yourself in notepad and save the file.  Notice that for every scenery entry there are two numbers that you have to change:

[Area.121]  "change to 120"

Title=Reno

Local=Scenery\Cities\Reno

Active=TRUE

Required=FALSE

Layer=116  "change to 120"

_issues.txt is in the same folder that your FSTScenery and scenery.cfg file are in.  Open it with notepad and see what it says.

The scenery folder in Addon Scenery needs to be named "scenery" not "Addon SceneryScenery"

The texture folder in Addon Scenery needs to be named "texture" not Addon SceneryTexture"

It is fine if both are empty.

You do understand that you have a folder called "Addon Scenery" and in that folder you have two folders, one called "scenery" and one called 'texture"?

I made all the fixes that you noted in scenery.cfg. FSTScenery did not completely reconcile the other scenery.cfg so I did it by hand.  After restarting FSX I got the same notice on Area.115 so I figured that it had to be something in the scenery and texture folders (see you got me to thinking a little better).  At that time I noticed that you had made a reply and after reading it and making the changes in scenery and texture everything works great!  I ended up with Reno being Area.121 and never could figure why but as long as everything seems to work OK it doesn't bother me.
I have to tell you guys how greatfull that I am for your patient assistance.  Not only did you guide me through the different areas to end up fixing some vexing problems, but more importantly to me, you gave me a much better understanding of how the whole scenery thing goes together. I have copied all of your messages and will keep them in a file. Thanks again for the time and effort that you put into this. Ted Harris - Eastern Oregon

Great Ted!

Reno is probably area 121 because you do not have area 116.  Personally if you look at scenery.cfg in notepad and see that there is not an area 116 then I would fix it.

You can use the FSX Scenery Library buttons and move Reno down so that it is just above Addon Scenery and click "OK".  Close FSX, run FSTScenery then look at scenery.cfg in notepad and see if the numbers are fixed.  Fix any manually that do not agree.

When I said that you could change the numbers manually you did understand that you would have to change all areas from 117 to 121 making 117 to 116, 118 to 117, 119 to 118, 120 to 119 and 121 to 120.  Remember that there are two numbers in each area that would have to be manually changed.

Glad that things are now working. I would however say that if you have a working system now, there is no technical need to manually renumber the entries in the scenery.cfg. FSX can and will work in this case and you do not run the risk of creating new issues if the manual edits go wrong.

Well I hope that I didn't speak too soon. Here is my situation: FSX is working perfectly with Reno at the top of the list in FSX\Scenery Library. Here is what C:\Program\Microsoft\FSX\Scenery and F:\Flight Simulator X\Scenery.cfg look like after I had manually changed the numbers and run FSTScenery: ( I am just showing one example as both files look the same)

[Area.114]

Now I go to FSX Scenery Library and relocate Reno to just above Addon Scenery.  F:\Flight Simulator X\Scenery.cfg remains the same. However, this causes C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\FSXScenery to revert back to this:

FSX still functions fine.

This only happens when I relocate Reno down to just above Addon Scenery in the FSX Scenery Library. I hope that I have given you enough information here. I no longer have the Area.115 notice.  I had to compose this in MS Word because the forum does not allow me enough time to get all of the information in the message box.

Firstly as noted a few times in this thread FSX does not use the scenery.cfg in the main FSX folder (in your case F:\Flight Simulator X) when it adds or removes scenery as seen in the FSX Scenery Library. It will not change when you add/remove scenery, and you should not edit it manually. This file is only used as a template by FSX when it first runs to copy a working one over to the ProgramData from where all other changes are then made.

Now based on your comments you do not understand the difference between what the [Area.xxx] number and the 'Layer=xxx' number means in the working scenery.cfg.

The [Area.xxx] one is usually an indication of when it was added to the scenery.cfg. It is a simple increasing number i.e. if you added another scenery folder to your setup via the FSX Scenery Library and then looked in the working scenery.cfg it would likely be [Area.121].

The 'layer=xxx' number tells FSX the ordering from top to bottom of scenery layers in your FSX Scenery Library. The 'layer=xxx' with the highest number will appear at the top of the list in the FSX Scenery Library, and so on down.

So as you added the Reno scenery folder last, it has the highest area number, but as you then moved it down the FSX Scenery Library list, its layer number changed to reflect this fact. The only case where you would have area and layer numbers the same throughout your working scenery.cfg is if you never deleted a scenery layer after you added it, or never moved a newly added or default scenery layer around in the FSX Scenery Library.

As I recommended before, leave management of the entries in the FSX Scenery Library to FSX itself as it knows what it is doing and do not manually edit the scenery.cfg. As the old adage goes, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", so enjoy your working configuration and don't worry about Area or layer= numbers anymore.

I guess what I mis-interpreted was idahosurges's note:
"After that rerun FSTScenery and then go look at your scenery.cfg file and see it renumbered everything.  Istanbul should be "area 116 / layer 116" and Reno should now be "area 120 / layer 120" and everything in between should be numbered accordingly."
I have a better understanding now.
Thanks again for the good instructional help.
