ERROR CODE 40: HOW TO FIX THIS ISSUE
 
 
This post is written to assist you in fixing ERROR CODE 40 quickly, and, assist us too. ERROR 40 is very simple, it means there are default FSX/Prepar3D files MISSING or CORRUPT in your FSX/P3D installation that should be there and should be the correct FSX/P3D design,...  there is NO LOGICAL REASON why those files should be missing or corrupt files would be present.
 
The GEX/GEP3D interface confirms the files it is going to replace are present and not corrupt before it is run to prevent install corruption and backup corruption or failure. If we did not run this check, then your installation would never display or restore correctly. This is a FAIL-SAFE system and it will never fail to confirm a FSX/GEX - P3D/GEP3D install correctly and maintain a SAFE backup of FSX/P3D files.
 
IF you are aware of files missing due to some addon, restore them to <FSX> (or Prepar3D)Scenery\World\texture. More often than not the issue is in Scenery\World\texture. The error will clear and GEX will run. Alternately if you keep a backup of that folder you can restore that backup and the GEX/GEP3D interface will run.
 
 
IF you do not know what has happened and you do not have a backup, then we can TRY to assist by defining which directory is corrupt however you need to post in the forum ERROR CODE 40 and then provide the following information:
 
1. IS the ERROR CODE 40 displaying
 
a. When you start the interface      or        b. When you click the ENABLE button
 
Let us know WHICH condition this occurs.
 
 
2. Please browse to
 
<Your FSX/P3D install>Texture <----- right click this folder and select properties and then post the SIZE value displayed
 
 
<Your FSX/P3D install>Scenery\World\texture <----- right click this folder and select properties and post the SIZE value displayed
 
I will tell you which folder is corrupted and which folder needs to be restored, however BE AWARE if you have no backup and no way to restore, a FSX/Prepar3D reinstall or repair will be required. There is no other way to fix this issue.
 
To run a FSX repair:
 
Place the FSX DVD in the drive and when the installer comes up it should give you the options:
 
REPAIR FSX   -     UNINSTALL FSX
 
Select repair and follow the directions as the repair function runs.
 
When complete relaunch the GEX interface.. if you get the same ERROR 40 then unfortunately the repair did not work and the only option at that point is to reinstall FSX.
 
 
 
 
FScene and FSceneX
 
 
If you came to this support forum with ERROR 40 after installing FScene or FSceneX products, be advised the devloper of FScene defines the USER must make a manual backup of the FSX Scenery\World\texture directory and use it to restore in order to uninstall FScene. http://forum.simflight.com/topic/70823-uninstalling-fscene4x/

FScene is known for installing textures into FSX that were originally designed to work in FS8 and FS9. As such those textures are not designed correctly for FSX and GEX may read those files as corrupt. http://forum.simflight.com/topic/41797-fscene-and-fsx/#entry448895
 
Be very aware that FS8/FS9 texture files although will run, are not designed to work correctly with FSX and the FSX landclass table. If GEX were to backup those files it would CORRUPT the backup therefore those files would be considered corrupt by the interface and the GEX interface will refuse to run.
 
Correctly designed by SDK definition, FSX texture files are 1024x1024 @ 684KB. FS8 and FS9 files are 256x256 and far smaller file size.
 
 
 
IF YOU did not make the backup that the FScene product directions defines so you can restore the default, then at that point there is only 3 ways to recover..
 
a. Use another computer and install FSX. Once complete browse to the <FSX>Scenery\World\texture <----- this folder and copy that to your original FSX install allowing it to overwrite...   GEX will then run fine
 
 
b. I don't know if this will work or not, but you can try it and BE AWARE that trying this means that if you have UTX or other scenery addons that alter the Scenery\World\texture folder, those will need to be reinstalled: Copy the current Scenery\World\texture (<----- this directory) to another location, then open the original FSX Scenery\World\texture directory and select to delete ALL the files out of that directory...  THEN re-run the FSX DVD repair option.
 
 
In theory that SHOULD restore the missing default files.
 
 
Again, if you have any other addons like UTX installed you will have to reinstall them and THEN run the GEX interface and allow it to start/backup/Enable your regions and UTX regional upgrades
 
 
 
 
Last resort:
c. Uninstall and then Reinstall FSX
